Dont really wanna do proRAW, dont need a million 75MB photos of my thumb or out of focus stored, and have them all fill up my device quick and be a pain to backup, etc.

straight to JPEGs from camera app seem a bit more compressed than I would like when zooming in (not a limitation of JPEGs either, some high quality ones can look really like pixel peeping)

I've heard people running a shortcut to convert HEIC to PNG or something,
Halide is another (3rd party app) that might have some nice processing or way of saving or whatever

Also would prefer not to micro manage.

..but I am curious!

Austin Mann has some great suggestions on his webpage:

Basically keep your ProRAW set to 12MP unless your scene has a lot of light and/or you want that extra boost in detail.

Thanks

This shortcut enables the right settings so they’re saved efficiently from the start?
Or does batch converting?

No prob dogg! It just goes straight to the ProRAW setting window instead of you having to go to iPhone settings > scroll all way down to Camera > Formats.

Saves you precious time for that photo opportunity.

ProRaw+12MP sounds like a nice happy medium to me on my 128gb and as you said 48MP for super detailed shots with shortcut

High efficiency ok at the top?

Also I noticed this just added the toggle for it in camera app, by default always off so wanna use pro raw sparingly for really detailed photos in general?

Yeah, High efficiency. And yeah toggle RAW for those photos where you want more control later.

For random shots where I won’t care about quality or extra image editing I’ll toggle ProRAW off in camera app.
