I've been reading through the site and also other sites and it seems like there are so many different software programs that one must download..

first, is there any way to rip a rented dvd onto the iphone without any software?

and second, if not, what's the best and most reliable software?

sounds like its handlebreak or whatever its called..

thanks guys..

I can only give advice on how to rip movies you own. MTR and then HandBrake.

so when you say MTR and then HandBrake, do you mean that I have to have both, or that MTR is your fav, and then you like HandBrake after?

sorry if these questions sounds stupid..I'm not good with this stuff

MTR gives you the video_ts and audio_TS folders

handbreak will encode the dvd to a file like .avi, .mp4, whatever

so if you want 100% backups that take like 7 gigs of space use MTR

if you want a movie file without the menus and play it like a quicktime movie, use handbrake and set the setting to your hearts desire

keep in mind you can use MTR and then handbreak or each one seperately depending on your end goal

i personally use handbrake to get the movie files on my mac and have no need for 100% backups

Duke is right, I use MTR for an exact digital copy of my movie and then HandBrake to covert it to my liking.

thanks guys..

and the only reason i asked about rented movies is because my borat dvd is so scratched up that its impossible to rip it..so I rented it..

I have enough dvds that i own already that will fill the whole iphone..so i'm not going around renting a bunch of movies..

but I totally understand where you're coming from..

thanks again..

k..
so I'm looking to download a version of handbreak for my comp, and it has

OS X 10.5 (intel), but mine is OS X 10.5.5 (intel), will this still work?

I hate to say this, considering what an Apple fanboi I am, but the best DVD ripping software I've used is on Windows. MacTheRipper works most of the time, but when it fails, I open up XP in Parallels and every time I've been able to rip such movies using DVD Decrypter or AnyDVD + CloneDVD (with their 21 day trial ... I'm thinking of buying now since they're better than DVD Decrypter).

Then I use Handbrake on the cloned DVD. The decryption tools are better on Windows, but the conversion tools are better on OS X.

I've been doing the same thing.

I'm taking some of my favorite DVDs and converting them to mp4 files that will play on my iPhone/touch, and play on a TV via the Apple adapter.

MTR to rip the DVD to the HD, then Handbrake to convert the file.

so I downloaded it and I'm trying to see what it looks like in "picture settings" (in handbrake) but the picture is like all messed up in the preview..
and for some reason I can't click on "2-pass encoding"

anyone know why?

speaking of redundant threads....

I didn't get anal on the other guy, it just evolved the way it did, I was helpful to him. Why are you following me???

k..
I searched for this problem on the site but couldn't find what I needed..

anyways..

I downloaded VLC but every time I start Handbrake, and click on "source" and then click on "the departed" (my own movie i own) then it says "handbreak could not find VLC"

I've tried "scanning anyway" but I only end up getting 3 chapters of the movie with the longest one being 4 minutes.. is there a step I've missed?
