I have a 2 x 2.8 Ghz Quad Core 2008 Mac Pro (MacPro3,1)

I want to put in couple of: Hitachi Deskstar 7K3000 3TB 7200RPM internal drives in the remaining spare bays

The specs are:

HDS723030ALA640, SATA III 6.0Gb/s, 7,200RPM, 64MB Cache, 3 Year Warranty. The Deskstar 7K3000 is Hitachi’s first hard drive to deliver an enormous 3 terabytes of storage capacity and 7200 RPM performance in a standard 3.5inch form factor.

Q: can these 3TB drives work in my Mac Pro?

or do I need to get SATA II 3.0GB/s alternatives?

Well the size drives are just fine, but may be cheaper to look for SATA II as our Mac Pros can only handle the 3GB/s transfer rate and not the 6GB/s rate of SATA III.

Whilst most drives are backwards compatible, there are some that have to use jumpers to 'throttle' the speed back.

Oh no. Not the deathstars! Specs look nice. Hope they worked on their build quality.

Thanks guys. I'm hoping its backwards compatible?

Is there reported problems with the build quality of these, otherwise I could get a Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB WD2002FAEX. But these are only 2TB and work out more expensive per TB than the Hitatchi

Advice/suggestions appreciated :D

The 7K3000 is fine. Have a bunch here. No issues. Apple sometimes uses Hitachi's as OEM drives even.

awesome thanks

Here's a 7K3000 review from MPG (not sure whether they sell these drives in their systems or not so this could be slanted) that claims it as very solid and speedy.... http://macperformanceguide.com/Storage-Drive-Hitachi-7K3000-3TB.html

thank you for this :D

guess i'll be ordering a couple on monday unless someone else can suggest a better drive in a similar price range

Lowly 2008 Mac Pro Octo? They're still very capable machines... gl on your HDD purchase

LOL, you're right still very capable esp with the Vertex 250GB SSD I have in it. It sounds very out of date "2008". Will wait till next year to possibly "upgrade" if  don't over price it :D

Needing to get two drives for my '09. Newegg has a pretty kickin' special on 3tb hitachi's, but I've been reading on the reviews about people not being to format them past 801gb. Is this still an issue?

Got 8 of em here.

No issues.
