What is the difference between my computer's name and the netbios name?

Netbios is mainly relevant if you are connected to Windows server (E.g domain controller, AD) or use shared folder (MS-based).
If you life in a Mircosoft-free environment you can ignore it.

And the computer name shows up on the network? How do you view the people network?

Before jumping in details pease give us more info about your setup. What computer you have; are they connected ? What OS is running. That will help to answer more precise.

Well I have an early 2011 Macbook Pro 13-inch i5 8gb of ram. I'm using OS X Mountain Lion. I'm using a verizon router for my internet. I mean I posted this in the Mountain Lion section so I think it's self explanatory.
