What is the dvd performance like in the iMacs?

Well i have one but i am planning to connect it up via Optical sending a 5.1 signal to my Receiver and wondering how different it would be rather than from a dvd player;
well firstly can it ouput dts/dts-ex and all the extended outputs from dvds?
What is the jitter and other audio stats via the optical?
thanks, it is very hard to come across this kind of information online, i hope to connect this up to a 7.2 system and my imac will be the screen and dvd player for quite a while so obviously hope it is not the weak link in the system
