What is the exact maximum memory Imac 2.8ghz can take? ddr2 5300 or ddr2 6400?

im looking forward to purchasing the maximum memory for my 2.8ghz imac
however crucial states the maximum is DDR2 5300 but in other websites i see that the maximum is DDR2 6400?

why 2 answers?


i obviously know the maximum amount is 4gb i just want to know
the maximum speed.

Depends on your model of Imac(Ie when it was manufactured).

In April of this year Apple released the new(current) imacs with the ddr2 6400 ram which clocks in at 800mhz. Prior to this model, it had ddr2 5300 which clocked in at 667 mhz. The older imac wouldnt be able to utilize the newer memory, as its FSB can only handle the 667mhz. The new imac should be able to handle the older memory, but then your slowing down your computer.
