What is the fastest ssd for my Mac Pro Mac Pro (Early 2009)

Hello all,
What would be the fastest SSD that I can purchase for my boot up(Start up) drive, and fast functioning for editing and colour grading softwares that work with 4k videos.

I have a

Mac OS Mojave 10.14.4
Mac Pro (Early 2009)
Prosessor 2 x 3.33 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon
Memory 64 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 4 GB

The fastest is not the most important thing to consider. The most important is that the drive can sustain a constant read and write at top speed at all time. Last year, (may be out now). I tried SAMSUNG, KINGTON, OCX and SANDISK SSDs and benchmarked them with stress test software for a 64GB sequential read/write test. Only SANDISK Extreme series could achieve the same peak speed from the begining till to the end in the benchmark cycle. The rest could just last less than 10-20 seconds at peak speed then they all dropped their performance sharply.

In my case, only SANDISK Extreme Pro SSD could be constantly being flushed ruthlessly at top speed without any performance degrading after a period of time of sequential stressful workload. If you don't like SANDISK. Then KINGSTON FuryX is the second top that I tried out in the benchmark. It could last longer than SAMSUNG 800 and OCX (SAMSUNG 800 even had compatibility problem that sometime it freezed my Mac and don't remember the OCX model).

But this year, there are new products. And my information could be outdate now. Just FYR.


This Model is out now. But it is the best after I tried out all 4 major bands of SSD on my Mac (vendor provided for stress test POC) by that time. It won the performance among all SSDs on Mac Pro 2010 under a dedicated SAS 6Gbps RAID controller. So I bought 16 disks of it in last year.

FWIW... Samsung are the manufacturers of the majority of Apple's own issued SSDs in most machines since 2012 (and maybe even before then). Toshiba was also an official Apple SSD supplier in the early days, but have not seen reports they have been issued in the latest machines.

Have been using Samsung SSDs in authentic 2012 MP5,1 since it was purchased without problems. Stay clear of the new QVO 860 and EVO 970 PLUS models since both have reports of issues with MP5,1. Can personally verify SATA based EVO 840, EVO 850, EVO 860 work fine directly in SATA bays/sleds and via PCIe adapters. Can also personally verify EVO 970 NVMe works fine via PCIe adapter.

PCI blade with NVMe drive on it. The MacPro FB group has lost of info on how to do this (or see that link in a response above). Since you are on 12.14 your boot room is probably correct to do it easily too.
