What is the largest movie you can copy to your iPad with iTunes?

I have a rip of Teletubbies I want to get on the iPad for my kid. It is a 2+ hour double episode DVD and is at 2.65 GB on my Mac's disk. I have it in iTunes and set to sync with the iPad. Halfway through the copying process, the iPad errors out with:

"Attempting to copy to the disk 'xxx's iPad' failed. The disk could not be read from or written to."

and then

"iTunes could not copy 'Teletubbies...' to the iPad 'xxx's iPad' because the file could not be read or written"

Is there a file size limit of movies or transfers? I'm pretty sure it is within the resolution specs at 976 x 544, h.264 AAC.

You could give Goodreader a try? You can copy your movies straight to it using the app, either using the document transfer in iTunes or the wifi file transfer function. In practice I've found this a much easier way to transfer DVD rips to iPad and it's only about 59p

Same here. Transferred fine to my iPad.

I don't want to be the armchair quarterback here, but wouldn't you be better off with a smaller-sized file in the first place? The files I rip to Apple TV tend to be in the 2GB+ range but I re-rip to a smaller size (usually 50% smaller) for iPad-only viewing.

Nope, good point. I was just being lazy in not wanting to run Handbrake for an hour and a half. But I did that this morning and the file went over fine.

My call with Apple Support suggested that something may be wrong with the file -- it was a d/l so I can't argue that with him even though the movie played fine on multiple Macs.

I believe the threshold is just below 4gigs. In my experience with the AppleTV and iPhone both do not recognize (very well) over this mark. I know this most recently in my encode of Avatar as the blu-ray I was working with came in just over the 4gig mark. Lord of the Rings and The Godfather part 2 were similar results.

I backup my ripped movies on a FAT32 partitioned disk so I keep the file size below 4 gig and have not had any problems watching about 20 or so movies on the iPad.

You can transfer any file type to the iPad using it, and yes it does play mp4
