The app store has more than 40.000 different apps. There are really fantastic apps to explore.
The apps seems to come in waves. We had the farting, the bikini, the beer, calender wave to mention only a few.
Interesting would be to share what the next wave is.

Any ideas?

:)

I'm hoping and guessing it'll be a wave of bigger, badder, and better apps, especially in the games department. How long before an app company like Square Enix decides that porting their classic Final Fantasy 7 would bring in good money (I'd pay a pretty penny for that)?

I agree with the poster above that it'll be "bigger, better apps" (probably we'll have a game that will finally hit $14.99, but possibly in November-December).

I have been thinking about this thread since I read it, and wouldn't you know, I've been seeing a plethora of compass apps of late.

We've had the carpentry "level" wave, but have we had a good Compass wave?

(And why does that sound so geeky?)

Oh, also, the Hot or Not/Am I Sexy wave. I think that's due.

Too little money for them

My guess is that a good game makes around 500k- 1m. Thats only for the good ones. They would be newcommers to the iPhone channel and maybe it is too little money to risk the effort at the moment, but when subscriber numbers increase thats another deal.

I read on iLounge that Apple are considering a pay-as-you-go iPhone (or some such). That would include Wi-Fi capability, and I fancy, expand their market exponentially. Apps would surely follow.

Devs may be more likely to use Apple's "buy-in-app" option as part of 3.0, so you can have a lower priced app, but sell add-ons. For example, I've probably spent $50 on Sims add-ons to the original $40 game, but I wouldn't have paid $90 initially.

There are rumors of a magnetometer in an upcoming iPhone device, so a working compass might be possible. But it also might be a free app, courtesy of Apple (or Google Maps) so selling one might be tricky.

If there is video in the next iPhone, video-based apps should follow. What developers need to do is 'skate where the puck is going to be' not where it is, as they say in Hockey.

For example, if the next iPhone will have a magnetometer and video, think of the apps you could build with that, and maybe Apple might even feature your app! You could do some kind of Blair Witch maze game. One person sets the GPS of the center of the maze, and videotapes the path, then brings the phone out to newbies who have to find the center. They could be timed. The video from their GPS location could be accessed but it costs them penalty points. Like that bush maze in The Shining or a corn maze, just in time for Halloween. Heck you could do it in NYC! Knock yourselves out! (but perhaps thank me in the app! I have more ideas than time!)

compass

good ideas. Compass you can allready see in the store but might be not very sustainable with Apple giving it for free.
But apps using the compass this could be a wave.

Apps that recommend other apps.

Fits right into the type of category that the people stupid enough to buy flatulence apps would get.

I think the next wave of apps won't be new apps at all, but a mass wave of updates, trying to incorporate push notification in all your current apps.

That, or more apps to focus on bluetooth in the touch. Also, more P2P games.

inStore feature

What do you think of inStore payments. There is a lot of debate going on that this will lower the app price, as developers will sell their games for 99 cent and ask for extra money if you want to play on a higher level.

I think this will be the answer to the proposed 'premium' app store. Instead of a separate system for the Electronic Arts type developers, with $19.99 apps, they can still sell $4.99 apps and, frankly, nickel and dime you (in a positive way, I hope) to get a better return on their investment.

For example, I've spent way more on Sims enhancements than I would have if I had to purchase them all at once, with the game.
