I have a iPhone 3GS 32GB just today. I am confused with how to JB it. Do I need to restore the iPhone firmware 3.1.2 before using blackra1n? Why? The firmware is already 3.1.2 why do I need to restore the firmware then? Or is there a JB 3.1.2 firmware? please advise... how do I JB this... and will it affect my iTouch on iTunes then when syncing them? thanks

If you have a new 3GS, you probably have the new bootrom which means you will have a tethered jailbreak. Everytime you need to reboot or restart your phone, you will have to have a computer, USB cable and copy of Blackra1n to restart the phone. If not, the phone will not come back on at all.

You should do plenty of reading and research and be sure you want to get into that handicap.

And if your phone already has the 3.1.2 firmware, you do not need to restore it. Those instructions are for people with previosly JB phones on lower firmware.

Do a search to find out how to determine your bootrom level. If you are at a level that requires a tethered jailbreak, I'd say forget it. That would be way to frustrating the first time you have to reboot or turn off your phone away from your computer (assuming you need your phone to function as a phone).

Good luck, do your research.

What do you mean by determine your bootrom level? Do I have to do that in order to jailbreak?

No.

But as explained above, there is a new Bootrom on recent iPhone 3GS's. If you have the new Bootrom, you have a big problem with jailbreaking.

The problem is this - if you jailbreak, then once you turn off the phone you will have to connect it to your computer to be able to turn it on again.

The same will be true if your battery runs out. In fact, every time your phone is turned off, you will need to reconnect to your computer.

This is called a "tethered jailbreak". You can learn more by searching this forum for "tethered jailbreak".

It seems the OP is just glossing over the tethered jailbreak issue.

Likely his next post will be that he just JB his 3GS, but when it restarts it's in recovery mode.

I would like to clarify that you will be able to put it in sleep mode using the power button. I rarely actually turn off my phone. It's now been up for almost six days without reboot. And that reboot was only because I upgraded Mobile Substrate, something that could easily have been delayed until I was near a computer.

I am going to be away for a short time.. do I need to have iTunes installed on a Netbook I use with XP or Vista with BlackRa1n? or any laptop with just BlackRa1n only or I need to have iTunes 8.0-9.0 installed on the laptop as well. advise? Thanks..

do the research before you do ANYTHING...
Obviously, you dont have a CLUE about what you are getting into, so before you come here asking all sorts of questions, spend some time researching this on Google before you go any further..
