oh wow! thanks for shedding some light on this. I never knew! Before I posted, I googled "Monterey Canyon" for the hell of it and it pointed me to the middle of the sea and I just assumed it was an error. I think it would have made more sense for Apple to make the shade blue rather than purple if the geography is underwater
Actually when you get deeper in good viz, and the sun is at just the right angle, it can look just like that. Always reminds me of a particular dive spot, a deepish sea arch at the Poor Knights Islands, NZ.
Monterey Canyon is real deep though, you'd need a submersible I would think.
