I plan to switch to an M1 chip Mac in the coming months. As you know, Apple charges an exorbitant price for storage capacity. Because of that, I am planning to use the Mac with an external NVMe SSD.

Thunderbolt 3 supported NVMe SSD boxes are very expensive so I looked for cheaper boxes. I found a 20 Gbps (USB 3.2 gen 2 × 2) SSD box from several brands, I am thinking of buying this box. But when I look at the technical specifications of the MacBook from Apple's site (image below), it says that USB 3.1 supports up to 10 Gbps. USB 4 supports up to 40 Gbps. Will my SSD box run at 10 Gbps or will it run at 20 Gbps?

So I want to ask this: Does USB 4 have all the previous USB technologies? Will USB 4 itself match the speeds of previous USB versions? If so, I should be able to use this SSD box at 20 Gbps.

A good question, but the way Apple has worded the specs, my money is on No 3.2 gen 2x2 support. USB4 has 20gbps support, but encoding is different and tunneling 3.2 gen 2x2 20Gbps is optional.
But you might find more information in this thread, where it seems even 10gbps with usb 3.1 gen 2 is hard to obtain.

I don't know either but I agree with the above. I don't think any USB device will go faster than 10Gbps on a Mac. Above that you'll need a Thunderbolt device.
