Post your answers here to your Favorite race in Starcraft 2 multiplayer and what the benefits of using them are!!! Lets get the debate going!

to be honest the game is pretty balanced

this is almost a useless discussion :D

i play protoss.... for NEW players who are learning the game... protoss is probably easiest to learn so in a sense makes it stronger but at the highest levels all races are about even

zerg would probably be the hardest for a newer player

I play Zerg. I just love the dynamics of the Zerg. I love having to manage creep and larva, on top of everything else. I also love the infestors. It is such a fun unit to use.

There really isn't one. Under the right management, all three races are capable of equal amounts of awesomeness. I myself play Terran most of the time; pick a race that matches your playing style and you'll be fine.

But what are the playing types and how do you know the building orders? Like for the terran how do you get it to build to marines at once?

It really really depends but i'll share my experiences.

I started with Terran, played them for a good 4 months as they felt more familiar having done the campaign, they are easy to get along with, everything seems quite logical, the units are simple to understand.

I always went for the Marine, Medivac w/Stim and Tanks to dictate range setup, it worked well, but I found them a little boring.

I now play Protoss, I like the ability to warp units, it suits my play style a bit better, I love 4/6 gate rushes and I've got that down to a T now. I love the micro involved with blinking units, using forcefields and such.

Then theres Zerg, I don't use them personally, for me they're a little too micro intensive but they are in my opinion better than Terran.

In my humble opinion it goes Protoss > Zerg > Terran.

Having said that, theres a lot of top players that disagree with that.

My advice is check out youtube and watch some videos. Check out HD Starcraft, When Cheese Fails, Husky Starcraft etc on youtube. Team Liquid are a great team using some awesome tactics too.

As someone that was diamond in 1v1 when it came out (school started and had to quit tho >.<) I can say that terran is the easiest to learn because you can terran is a defensive race in a way + you get ranged units to start, most new players don't know how to effectively get surrounds and when to back off with melee units. And zerg is by far the hardest to learn, no one builds enough hatcheries/creep tutors/drones.

2 cents

What does ranged units mean? Whats the most important buildings? Its all about having a little rcvs to get the minerals and gas right? How do you build two units at once?

And is there technology that makes the building of units faster?

I would suggest playing the campaign first, or at least a little bit of it, it'll give you a good foundation on how to build units etc and how the game 'works'.

Online is a whole different ballgame, but you'll at least know the basics.

As a Protoss player, Zerg is the weakest race by far. Protoss dominates Zerg, it's not even funny :D

Atleast Terran have a fighting chance.

1. Protoss
2. Terran
3. Zerg

Protoss is pretty easy to start off with and powerful. You can build buildings faster and get more work done because instead of your probe having to sit there and construct the building, he just warps it in and it basically builds itself. Protoss does cost more minerals, gas, and supply, but that is because they are really powerful. For example, one Zealot is 100 minerals and 2 supply. That zealot can easily kill 2 or 3 marines. Not only that, Protoss are GREAT against Terran because Terran usually goes Marrine Marauders, and Colussus and a decent ground army will easily beat their army. You can also cannon rush which is really funny :p

What does that supply count mean in upper right hand corner that everyone talks about?

It's how many units you can support. Max for the game is 200, but you start off with 10. Each supply depot you build adds eight supply.

Some units take up 1 supply, other take up to 6 supply. It all depends on the power and the "tier" of a unit.

Oh and a good Terran player can be versatile against any race. However, up to a certain rank, maybe platinum or high plat, you just need good macro (aka resource management) to win. As for TvP: kill them quickly and use ghosts' emp. It wipes out protoss shields and templar's energy so it can't storm. If some protoss goes mass stalkers, I'd like to get marauders (they win 1v1 against stalkers if I recall) and a raven for the point defense drones.

I find that as a Terran, Protoss tends to be my easiest race to go against. It's Zerg and those god damn banelings and muta harass that gets me. Man we should start a macrumors' SC2 community, where we share Character IDs and do some match ups.

Im down to get some matches going honestly im ok right now just bought thegame 2 days ago im just trying tolearn which race is strongest and the build orders and stuff i never played w zerg yet the look confusing as hell

All you need to be strong is to constantly scout and keep the pressure up. You can win every game simply by scouting and countering what he has. For example, I got my observer in the back of his base and he had no detection. So I just got 8 Dark Templars and destroyed his economy completely. After that, he did build detection and massed up siege tanks, so I got my shield upgrade to level 2 for the siege tanks, and walked in with 4 archons, killed all the siege tanks, and and blinked up with my stalkers.

Not necessarily. Look at the trend in high level matchups. There was a point where protoss was figured out for a bit and had success but it's slipping away as you can see from following major tournaments. (It's useless to talk about balance below high-pro level competition. Anything "imbalanced" below that comes from the players not playing the race optimally). Protoss is easy to learn, but it is hard to master. The small things you have to do in order to separate yourself from a good protoss to a great protoss is hard to do. Zerg is hard to learn and hard to master, but when you do it is very powerful and very capable of beating protoss

This isn't true. If both players aren't microing maybe... but if the marines are kiting the zealot the terran should lose 0 marines to 1 zealot lol In a head to head battle, of course. But you can't compare units like that.

I would direct the OP to www.teamliquid.net to search the forums for questions and post there instead. It is a lot more sc2 friendly and there is a LOT of information there you are asking. you can even watch streams of people play to see what you could be doing better (they are located at the top right of the page)

Why is this even a competition? The strongest race in SC2 is the Xel'naga.

That's who I'd play. If I could.

Terran is the strongest.

They are flexible, powerful, cost effective and have some of the most imba (imbalanced) units in the game.

transport full of stim infantry can snipe dozens of workers or a tech building in seconds.

Siege Tanks in critical numbers can one shot large clumps of units, and they require no micro.

Infantry+dropship (MMM) is the single most cost effective composition in the game

They can scout anywhere on the map, instantly drop a building or get 500 minerals for 50 energy.

They can reposition their buildings within seconds

They have some of the most lethal builds that can instantly win them games when unprepared. (cloak banshee, blue flame helion drop, 2 rax push, etc, etc)

Zerg is by far the weakest.

they require a lot of micro management (spread creep, add injections, manage multiple bases)

most of their units are very cost ineffective unless massed or in optimal position (equal cost army battles favor protoss and especially terran when you're zerg)

they only have 1 building so you have to balance building units and workers

they have no siege units

no anti air until tier 2 (discounting mass queens and static defense)

no unit that takes advantage of high ground mechanics

They have two of the weakest units in the meta game right now (ultralisks and hydralisks)

They have the least amount of unit types

you HAVE to stay ahead to win.

Protoss stands somewhere in between. They have a lot of gimmicks and spells. And to make your units cost effective you need very good positioning or impeccable unit control. It's pretty hard to just mass low tier units and win like terran or zerg.

But of course, this only applies when two players are of similar level and have some understanding of the game.

Unit for unit, Protoss is the most powerful, if you look at prices, abilities, and versatility. They are easy to learn and have several upsides that allow new players to get into them easily. This does not mean that they lack a complex playing element as well, all of BLizzard's races seem to have their own unique dynamics. However, I think that unit for unit (f.e, zealot vs marine vs ling), the Protoss are the most powerful. 100 minerals will get you:
1 zealot which can take out up to 3 poorly microed marine, or 1 well microed marine.
2 marines which can kill 2 zerglings each + if actually microed
4 zerglings which are good fodder and harass, but really nothing more until upgraded with more cash.

Even as a relatively experienced SC2 player, I still play Protoss, cause my computer lags for the Zerg, and the Terrans seem to clunky. Can never get over that.

As you might have noticed, OP, there's a lot of discussion about this subject. If you knew more about the game I'd direct you straight to teamliquid, but for now, try playing the campaign on hard, play the challenges, and go look up day9tv.blip.tv. There's a lot of information about Starcraft 2, it's the successor to the most player game of ALL TIME and the largest e-sports game ever as well.

I know debates are nice, but you'll get people saying silly WoW-like things like "My race" and such, when you can switch any game you like in SC2. People think everything that they don't get is strong and everything they do get is weak in comparison as well.

No offense, but you're way too new to really understand the game yet.

I think one of the best things about Starcraft 2 is that its so well-balanced. It really depends on the combination between the player skill and luck. The more you play the better you get at the game, and so you increase chances in your favor - that's what wins the game.

However, even highly skilled players don't win every single game, and they lose games too. So I don't think there is such thing as the best race. The strategy of Starcraft 2 has so many details that it is really up to the player to adapt to given circumstances and win the game.

i think all the races are balanced, the difference is caused by the player. I am personally more confident with terran as i have played most games with them.
