What is the use of ATNT sim card while jailbreaking ?

hi..

i got my iphone from ebay.. it didnt come with the default sim card from ATNT..
i downgraded it from OTB 1.1.2 version to 1.1.1 and now its showing the activation screen.
i haven't tried jail breaking it because i believe that ATNT sim card is needed for the same. Can someone tell me whats the use of the sim card and whether I can do jailbreak without ATNT sim card.. or can put any other sim card and jailbreak it..

i am in US for a business trip and will be leaving in a week.. also i dont have access to any other US sim card.. the only thing i have is an Indian sim card from the local carrier back in india.. will that work..

you can jailbreak without a sim card. you need wifi to jailbreak using most easy methods.

unless you unlock the iphone, you need an at&t sim card to use the phone features.
