What is this extra junk on my machine?

I noticed in my control panel (windowsXP) some thing called "MobileMe Preferences". I was sure I hadn't installed anything by this name myself so I was a little surprised. Did a google search and found out it was some Apple software used for crap I don't have, don't use, and don't want. Speaking with a friend online, he told me he thought it was part of an iTunes update. And I remembered, I did let the auto-update for itunes/quicktime run. But why did it install some piece of software I DID NOT WANT AND WAS NOT INFORMED OF? I do NOT want Apple or any other software company installing software I am not aware of on my machine.

I looked to remove this program and could not find an uninstaller for it. So I'm guessing it's wrapped in, and part of, iTunes now. If anyone can inform me of how to get rid of this bloat-ware I would appreciate it. I don't want to get rid of itunes, just this extra junk cluttering my machine that I did not want installed in the first place.

AFAIK, if you have an Apple computer, just drag it to the trash. Since it sounds like you are running XP not via Boot Camp or Parallels, you must have something other than an Apple computer. If so, this is probably the least of you worries.
What I would do is still just drag it to the trash. Good luck....

The only way to get rid of the MobileMe pref. is to uninstall iTunes. If you have a problem with bloatware why the hell are you using some winshit beige box? And I agree with Morod, a MobileMe pref. pane is the least of your worries running some junk box with Winshit on it

Apple shouldn't include MobileMe with iTunes for two reasons:

1) Some MobileMe customers aren't allowed to install iTunes at work, but they could install a small MobileMe app.

2) It's a back-door method to get customers (like the whole Safari fuss).

It's really shady activity.

Thank you for your reasonable reply. So it sounds like it's a "you're stuck with it" situation, if a person wants to keep itunes up to date. Very crappy on Apple indeed (just like the safari thing you mentioned). With practices like this, Apple is becoming more and more like (the hated) Microsoft and other software developers.

To the first two replies: I am not a "Fan" of Apple or Microsoft. This isn't about Ford vs Chevy. I am non-biased and therefore can like or dislike equally, based on simple facts. And it's a simple fact that by Apple doing this with Safari and now this MiniMe crap, they are trying to force software down peoples throats JUST LIKE Microsoft and other software devs.

I work in the IT field and have a decent understanding of what's going on under the hood of my XP box. It's a tool used to get things done, and does everything I want it to do, and there isn't a single process running that I don't want/need running.

When you allow what is supposed to be legitimate, trusted, software to run, it shouldn't sneak some crap in like this. Period. I have lost trust in Apple.

After trying mobileme I have decided that this was not for me.
Now I get annoying popup windows telling me that my mobileme login password is wrong or missing.
I have not found any way deactivating or uninstalling mobileme fro my macbook.

For this reason alone I would never ever consider using mobileme and my freshly awaken enthusiasm for Mac got a serious damper. I thought was Bill Gates style, to press unwanted products on trusting customers.

How do I get rid of mobile me?

On Mac OSX you simply go to System Preferences and click on MobileMe icon, then the Sign Out button. That will end all login errors. Also check any MobileMe configuration on Mail.app Preferences/Accounts.

MobileMe control panel is integrated with the OS and cannot be removed. Simply logoff and let the account expire at http://www.me.com under Account/Account Options.

For me is a great service and use it every day.
