Looks to me like a bookmark to the National Geographic website placed on the home screen. Strange they would put it on the website.

That's what I thought, but I checked the mobile site on my phone, and it doesn't have it's own icon when you add it to the homepage... strange.
 
It's in the section about customising your home screen, so I guess it sort of makes sense.

Perhaps... but it's literally the only customization on the screen. The apps aren't even moved from their default position... Anyone have any idea what the text might say? I'm inclined to think that it says "Nat Geo," but it doesn't really look that way.
 
On your iPhone, go to the National Geographic website, from there to to the full (not mobile website). Now add a bookmark to your home screen. It's the same one as the picture. It makes sense that the bookmark would be for the full website and not the mobile one.
