What IS this on John McCain's head?

Below is a photo of John McCain as he appeared on Conan O'Brien's show. (He's not really falling asleep, he's just pretending.)

My question is, what the heck is that on his head? It looks something like a baseball cap, but it's much too flat.

At the bottom is an enlargement with Photoshop curves applied. Here it looks like some kind of yarmulka...but with a ball cap-type bill.

Anybody see the show, and can tell us?

(Better yet, anybody not see the show but got a funny guess?)

The edges of the mic seem to just "fit" the top of McCain's head, so I thought he was wearing something.

Guess I should watch Conan's show so I'd know where his mic is and what it looks like.
