What is this symbol in TextEdit?

Lately (maybe since Sonoma?) I have been seeing this symbol pop up when I type certain things into TextEdit on my Mac. What is it? I click it and nothing happens; there is no hover-popup explaining it. It looks like some sort of accessibility aid that might have gotten turned on?
