I know that the iPhone will not have Flash or iChat at launch. Are these programs that can be upgraded through firmware/itunes download at a later time or will I need to buy a completely new iPhone for these amenities?

Anything software-based can be upgraded via an update. Something like 3G connectivity cannot, unless they have already included the hardware inside, just not enabled it (highly unlikely).

Depends.

A lot of stuff will be capable through software.

I would suspect both of those would be software based, but there may be hardware issues that limit their ability to implement them.

All of those will be upgraded, i can assure you.

The only thing that will never be possible:
3G
GPS
Removable Battery.

I expect to see a nice / large update for the iPhone next week.

If Apple chooses to support these features, I'm sure it will be in a software update for the original hardware revision.
