Let me first recognize that a number of people are getting MBPs that they are thrilled with and have high performance. Some good units, hard of hearing, low expectations - who knows? At the other end are a number of people with horror tales of multiple MBPs with multiple problems. Bad units, too much looking and listening for problems, too high a set of expectations - I doubt it but hard to answer. I am confident, however, that Apple must be embarrased by the number of problems and the lack of Quanta performance, and ultimely the choice they made in going with Quanta as their vendor.

What are your thoughts as to why Quanta - now in the EIGHTH MONTH of production, is still producing MBPs with some of the same issues as we were seeing in the first several weeks? I wonder if part of the issue is that Apple has little manufacturing expertise as they outsource and the companies they outsource to also outsource to others, who in turn.......... :-0 Befor you know it you are 5 levels removed from Apple's expectations and here we are.

Are they not capable of correcting the issues? Do they not know? Do they not care? Might Apple be looking around to move production back to ASUSTEK or someone else that can perform more in line with the Apple image?

Not all - but so much of this is quality 101 stuff (missing keys, 17" floppy screens, misalignments, speaker distortion, etc.). EIGHT MONTHS........

I'm not laying the whine & heat on them as it appears that Apple / Intel may own more of those issues directly. Of course, Apple most importantly owns the selection of Quanta - feels like a really bad choice :-(

Probably cost they are cheap.

Also probably because, "If Dell chooses Quanta, you won't get fired choosing Quanta".. it's always easier to pick someone used by the industry leader.

generik - I have seen the corporate "herd mentality" of playing it safe. What confuses me though is WHY Quanta can't get the BASICS corrected after seven months of experience with the MBP. I'm miffed that Apple has not corrected things yet - maybe they are locked in with Quanta for the time being and do not have a viable alternative.

Another issue could be that they think the quality issues are almost "corrected" - only to see them continue month after month. Fool me once - shame on you, fool me three times - shame on ME.

I know it is possible that 95% of the MBPs are shipping at acceptable quality levels - but I doubt it. I know these forums have a disproportionate share of issues - but there still appears to be way TOO many issues for where we are in this seven month cycle.

Maybe Apple is going to launch rev b with Merom and move on.

Could it be possible that the issues might have been resolved on the newer systems, but customers still continued to be affected from the systems that they have in warehousing?

Another possibility could be these things are literally built and sent to the customer straight off the assembly line, and changes require remachining certain tools and hence they just decide to bugger it.

Either way it is said that the MBs are manufactured by Asus, but even then they aren't doing all that swell themselves.

generik - you are correct - Asus does the MB and it has a list of issues as well. The only difference that I can see is that the MB is much newer than the MBP - Quanta has had a lot more time to sort the issues out.

"Bugger it" rings a bell :)

Canader eh
Who makes the Mini? I just bought one and it's freakin' sweet! Obviously not as fast as my dual G5, but nonetheless-quick!

I haven't heard many Mini or iMac problems. Then again, they are 'older designs' as in they've had the G4/5's in them. Who knows?

bradc - not sure who makes it BUT I love mine as well :) It has been holding the fort down as I wait to order a MBP. Our mini has been fast, cool, stable and inexpensive. I loaded it up with 2 GB of RAM - we have been pleased - very stable WiFi also!!!!
