As we know, Airplay works seamlessly for displaying iOS and OS X based movies/music/photos on our TVs and music through our speakers.

However, I am not at all clear on the landscape of approaches for accomplishing these tasks on Android, Windows Phone, or Windows. Therefore I'm very interested for people to share their own approaches and let me know whether they are satisfied with their setup.

For music, I use BT to play my music in my car. My car is equiped with BT audio.

On my older car, I actually used my Nokia N97 Symbian phone. This phone has an FM transmitter. It will broadcast the music over an FM frequency and I can tune into that FM frequency with my car radio. I do the same for my stereo at home.

For playing movies on my TV, I use a mini-HDMI cable to plug may tablet to my TV.

I use PLEX to stream media from my Mac Mini to my TVs (via Roku boxes). Same set up would also work with Windows.

Best cross-platform solution I have found is Roku3.

It handles:

Locally attached storage
Amazon
Hulu
Netflix
Youtube
Plex
TED
Google Music (unofficially)
and many many others.

I have a headless Linux file server/Plex server.

I then use the Youtube, Plex, Netflix apps under both iOS and Android to either watch on the device (iPad) and can use them to cast to my Rokus.

It is much more flexible than AppleTV.

AllCast Beta - though with my rMini and iPhone I rarely am pushing anything from my Moto G.

Most of the time its simply home sharing from my iMac.

Thanks for the responses so far. A couple of specific questions I have on top of the more general original question.

1. Can you display photos & videos from the Android Gallery or Google Photo app on the TV via the Roku? What are other options? Am I correct in my understanding that this is not possible with Chromecast?

2. Are there solutions for streaming audio from an Android device (aim is be able to stream both Spotify & Google Music) to speakers in a similar way to iOS+Airport Express? I want to avoid bluethooth and use of a TV.

How does this work in practice? Share from these apps to Roku app which then relays the content to Roku?
