Other then going to bed when you're tired, how do y'all put your MBA to sleep:

1) close lid
2) widget with deep sleep
3) widget with safe sleep
4) power button to sleep

New user and just curious about how others do it. I've just been closing my lid although I did d/l the widget with 3 different sleep modes

Closing the lid is fine. It'll enter safe sleep.

I used to prefer deep sleeping it, but I noticed that the safe sleep mode in Macs consumes so little battery that it's not worth the extra wait for the deep sleep to come back.

I just close the lid and tell it Good Night. ;)

I never use Sleep on any computer - just another thing to go wrong and it sometimes does and is fatal.

I recently had someone close the lid on my Air when it was connected to a 3G USB modem. The Air failed to restart afterwards and the USB modem was completely dead (had to be replaced).

Just make sure that your Time Machine icon in the menu bar is not spinning (if it is enabled)! I've wound up with a corrupted Time Machine disk when I put it to sleep in the middle of a backup cycle. I know -- stupid.

I'm not sure putting your Mac to sleep in the middle of a TM backup is the culprit.... TM should be able to handle a sleep request elegantly - with no data loss/corruption and pick back up later....

Close the lid if i am moving it down the hall or something - but for me - sleep is not ideal. I only use mine once a week or so - so coming back to a battery that has lost about 50% while doing nothing is no good.

(i am so used to hibernate!)

so shut down unless I am just walking down the hall to another room.

I always just close the lid. Windows users are always surprised when I just flip the laptop open and it's instantly ready to go, while they wait for their machines to resume. Vista sleep seems better than XP's, but still slower than OSX.

5) none of the above

Like a few others mentioned, you don't need the widget since you can use terminal commands to change the sleep mode.

sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0

That command there plus closing the lid puts the computer to sleep almost instantly as it disables safe sleep.

is there a reference for all these different sleep modes?

I don't know the difference between

Deep sleep / safe sleep / sleep
