I was just reading some articles about how the 3GS should fully support HD recording, neat. It might be a while before we see this enabled, on this phone or other generations, sorta like Bluetooth on the iTouch. Here is the question I pose to you; what would it take for the community to unlock this feature? Would it be a firmware or software hack? I like the video recording feature as is, but if I can have an HD camcorder in my cellphone, talk about all in one device.

I'd like to see your source on this... because I'm can almost 1000% guarantee you it's not true. But you know... there could be some margin of error there.

Why would they hold a feature like that back from launch?

Well I can almost 100% garauntee YOU are wrong. It was mentioned in the teardown & a 3 MP cam records WELL above the 1280x720 required for 720p recording and the new processor & RAM can support the extra bandwidth required for it. Whatever the reason for Apple not enabling it I can't tell you but if they wanted they could potentially enable it.

You're misunderstanding what they mean by it supporting it.

The camera CONTROLLER supports 720p video. The camera itself does NOT.

Yes, 3MP is above 720p, but just because you can take still shots at a certain resolution does not mean you can record at that same resolution. For instance, I have a 12 megapixel camera that can record at 720p, but it sure as hell cannot record at 12 megapixels, which would be 3000p.
