As well as HDR, my guess would be that they mildly colorized the pic. with sepia, matted a premade texture over it to give it the 'old photo' look, and played with the contrast etc.

In short the dude photoshoped the hell out of it but this is a fine example of when photoshopping the hell out of something really does do the image justice.
This is a composite of at least two photographs. The foreground with the elephant and the background were not shot at the same time. The amimals were shot in a zoo or other inclosed space and the more natural background was put in later. You can see the elephant is eating hay, a man made food.
The photographer is done a very good job of developing a "look" that he has carried through all of his photos. The good news for us is that all of us likely have a zoo nearby. Now that we see what can be done there, lets go shoot r maybe just look at our catalogs and see what we can do with them
