What kind of ram in the new intel chips?

Everyone's been buzzing about waiting or not waiting about the expected new chips from Intel. Does anyone know if they'll be using the ddr2/pc5300 laptop ram modules or if they'll require new ram?

Those chips have been out for a while, and everyone's using them, so the ram is cheap, and upgrading the ram in the white/alum imacs is easy.

If the new chips require new, scarcer, more expensive ram, wouldn't that make a difference in whether to pull the trigger now or wait til the next upgrade?

It depends on the chipset, not the processor.

If the iMac upgrades to Penryn processors like the MacBooks, they will still use the same RAM because Crestline (Santa Rosa) doesn't support DDR3.

Later this year, Cantiga (Montevina) will be released with the second-gen Penryn processors. This platform will support DDR3 RAM, but is backwards compatible with older DDR2 RAM. Apple may not use the new RAM right away because of the aforementioned cost issues, and may decide to switch later down the line. But no one really knows...
