Hi,

I was wondering if there are any Linux Distros out that I can put on an external SSD and boot from my MacPro by pressing "option" at startup.
I tried to boot the new Linux Mint 21 "Vanessa" and Ubuntu Desktop 22.04 LTS. Both withou luck.
Both look promissing as they start to boot, and the splash screen is visible, but afterwards it ends up in black screen.

(Just to be clear I do not plan to install it on the internal drive, I just want to boot linux from an external drive.)

Has anyone of you succesfully booted linux on a MacPro Late 2019? Which distro should work out of the box?

You need to unrestrict the firmware locks for external boot

My problem is beyond this point, as I said Ubuntu/Mint start booting, I can choose if I would like to install or "live boot" it, Then I see the Mint/Ubuntu splash screen, and afterwards blank screen forever.

If I would have not unrestricted the firmware you would not even come to select the boot opotions from linux boot manager.

Just to confirm:
You do have secure boot set to no security and boot from external media is enabled, correct?

Of course, otherwise I would be not able to boot any 3rd party OS. My Linux **are booting**. I'm asking for what distro successfully starts up to the desktop with working GUI (graphics), drivers, network, etc.

On my old MacBook I was able to start Ubuntu from an external drive, and everything was working graphics, WiFi, touchpad, etc., but the MacPro seems to have some HW/driver issues. Maybe due to the 5K displays? I don't know. That's why I ask what Distro works with most required drivers to start up and really use it.
