What Mac Should I Buy

Hey everybody, I'm new here, and this is my first post. Now what I was going to ask is what you think I should get for my new Mac, which will also be my first mac.

I am currently on a XP PC, and I am fed up with all the problems. All the viruses, annoyances, sypware, screw you ware all of that I just want it to stop. So, I came to the conclusion that I will purchase a Macintosh Computer.

I definately want a Laptop, so that leaves me with the MacBook and the MacBook Pro. Now, all I do mainly is Word Processing, occasional web-browsing, and I check my e-mail as well. I really like the Black MacBook, but I don't like the idea of paying 200 dollars just for something that scratches easier.

So what I want your guy's help with is what you think I should get, and what specs I should get with it, for example the RAM, Hard Drive space, all that.

Welcome to the better side of computing.

Base model MacBook with 1GB of RAM (not necessarily bought from Apple) and as much hard drive space as you can afford, should suffice.

Upgrade the RAM to at least 1GB, maybe 2, it may well be cheaper to buy the ram elsewhere as Apple's usually a rip-off. If you don't game I'd go for the Macbook, if you order it over the phone you should be able to get it without the glossy screen if you want to...

There isn't much weight difference between the different models, but if you want the bigger screen go for the Pro.

To add to what Mad Jew said if you want to burn DVD's go for the middle Macbook as the base Macbook cannot burn DVD's.

Yeah, about the Glossy display, I don't know what I will do if I get the MBP, I looked at it in the store and it's kinda cool. I just don't want to get it and then realize I hate it.

i need a laptop for the same reasons you do and i got the white macbook (1.8 Ghz). i went online and found another 512 ram so i can bump it up to 1 gig...it's about 30 bucks less than what apple sells it for. as for the glossy screen - i thought i was going to have an issue with that, but it's even better than the powerbook screens. you can see it from almost any angle and i have not experienced any problems with reflection..the only time it reflects is if the screen is black (shut down). also, the black macbooks do scratch easily and show oil stains much clearer than the white ones do. they also LOOK more like a PC, which i personally didn't like. just some suggestions.

1.83 GHz MB
1 GB RAM (you will in no way need 2 gigs as eraserhead said. You would do fine with 512, but just for it to be a little snappier and be uptodate longer, get 1 gig. If you wanna dvd-burner, get the middle MB or an external. And then, as much HDD as you want

Welcome to the mac world where life is a lot better.

For what you need, the base macbook should be good. I didn't read in your orginal post that you need a superdrive...you can always get an external one of you don't need one on the go. I've convinced 3 of my friends to get the 1.83Ghz macbook and they all love it. You can always add more memory later.

Whatever you decide to do, you will be very pleased.
