As a proud owner of a2338 on M1. I am seeking for a shell. I browsed Amazon, and it looks as if a lot of sellers think that a shell case that fits a2338, also fits some previous models.

So, for those who didn't miss a few generations of macs, is A2338 identical in its body to any previous models?

For example here the (2020 Macbook Pro 13") option has 2 USB C and a 3.5mm on one side, yet it says it's compatible with A2338. Basically, I am afraid to buy the wrong thing! :) My guess is, anything from 2018 upwards for MB pro will fit. Can anyone help to shed some light on it?

Apple did not change anything externally with either the M1 Air or M1 Pro. Consequently, they work with the same cases that their Intel predecessors use. All retina MacBook Airs use the current design, and the 13" Pro hasn't changed its design since they first switched to USB-C.

So in essence, I can go back 2 years, with a design that had two USB-C ports on the left and a 3.5mm jack on the right?

The 2020 13" MacBook Pro models have a slightly thicker chassis than the 2019 and earlier ones. There are two Intel models of 13" MacBook Pro introduced in 2020. One with four Thunderbolt 3 ports (two on either side) and one with two Thunderbolt 3 ports (two on the left side only). The M1 13" MacBook Pro replaces the latter model and is externally identical to it. The only external differences between either 2020 2-port 13" MacBook Pro and the 2020 4-port model are vents for cooling and the additional ports on the left side. All that to say that if you find something that supports the 2020 Intel 2-port 13" MacBook Pro, it will also support the 2020 M1 13" MacBook Pro as well.

That's what I did. All of the changes to the M1 Macs were internal. Nothing was changed externally other than changing what some keys on the keyboard do. The M1 Macs have two USB-C ports on the left, the headphone jack on the right just like the Intel based models they replaced.
