I need a laptop for four years to last me through high school should I get a MacBook or is that overkill also I’m open to buying used older models please share recommendations even if it’s a PC

The MBA M1 is the best bang for the buck these days. If your going Intel, I would stay away from anything 2016-2019 to avoid the butterfly keyboard with the exception of the 2019 16” although for the price anything M1 is a better value in my opinion. A 2015 13” is still an excellent machine for light duty and can take NVMe with an adapter.

I would get the M1 MacBook air
the reason being is that I do everything on mine,
the battery last 20 hours and
 will support these for a long time!

I also recommend the 2012 MacBook Pro with a good battery life if you need to save money
you can install Ventura using a OCLP patch and the graphic card is still functional in 2022.
