Guys, I need a new magsafe charger for my time MBP M2 16". What charger should I go for?

I read somewhere that I need the Apple 96W USB-C Power Adapter and USB-C Charge Cable but getting differing results online.

You can charge it with just about any charger, although it will charge slower with lower wattage chargers.
If you are talking about fast charging your 16" MPB, then you need the Apple 140W charger with the Magsafe3 cable.

The M3 (and I'm guessing M4 16" MBP) can also fast charge with the 140W charger and the Apple 240W USB-C cable.

Thanks smbu2000. I was hoping to go for a smaller charger. Is this possible? Or does it have to be the brick 140 charger?

Well you can still charge it with a smaller charger and usb-c cable. It just won't fast charge.
My wife has been charging her 16" M1 Pro using the 140W charger, but with just a usb-c cable (max 100W) and it charges just fine.

I haven't had my 16" for very long. My previous laptop was a 14" M1 Max, but I also charged it with a lower wattage apple charger (67W) and usb-c cable. (14" needs 96W or higher for fast charge) It charged just fine.

The 96W charger isn't that much smaller than the 140W charger and the 67W charger isn't that much smaller than the 96W one. (Although it is lighter.)

I have M2 Max system, which came with the 140W charger.

I've actually tried a lot of different chargers with it. The system never uses 140W of power, unless it is under high load *and* you are fast-charging the battery. You don't "need" that much unless you want to fast-charge.

I used it with a 70W power adapter for several weeks and never had any trouble.

You don't have to use MagSafe, either. The system can accept power over the USB-C ports, so you can use a standard USB-C power adapter (of appropriate wattage). I don't think M2 systems can accept the full 140W over the USB-C ports like the M3 systems can.

I've used it mine with lower-power USB-C bricks in a pinch while traveling. 30W is OK for light use and for charging the laptop while you're not using it (it will take a few hours), but it will draw from battery power if you are doing something compute-heavy. With 18W, it will draw from battery power if you are just using it lightly (with the screen brightness pretty high) but it will be able to charge the system while it is idle (it will take several hours). 12W is not enough to charge the system overnight.

Thanks potent peas. I was going to stick with the standard charger but now you've got me thinking.

I'm thing to compare sizes of the chargers add if there's a noticeable size and weight difference, will go with the smaller charger which can handle moderate use and simultaneously charge at a decent rate.

Guys will the following items be compatible with my Macbook Pro M2? The charger is stated as being compatible but the cable doesn't state the 2022 M2.

I have charged my MacBook Pro M4 Pro on a 20 watt charger overnight. It works just fine to charge while I am sleeping. It took a few hours to get from 50% to 100% but I was sleeping so I didn't care.

The only advantage to higher wattage chargers is the more the wattage, the faster the charging. I don't know what the maximum charge is on these devices but it does not matter as the devices will only consume as much power as they need. I could charge my iPhone on a 140 watt charger without issue.

Yes, they are USB-C. The device will only take as much power as needed and a higher wattage charger will not harm the device.

Thanks Ray.

I know the charger is compatible as the M2 Pro is listed as being compatible. But the M2 Pro isn't listed as being compatible with the USB C cable. M2 oddly.

Very bad English there from me. Let me try again... Going by the Apple specs, the charger is compatible with the MBP M2 16 but the M2 Pro isn't listed for the USB C cable.

I am reasonably certain that cable will work. If the machine will allow charging via USB-C, the cable should work as they are backwards compatible. If it doesn't work, send it back to Apple for your money back.

Thanks mate. I'm assuming Magsafe is better than USB C, or is that wrong?

Both work, I don't know which is better. USB-C can provide a lot of wattage, I don't about MagSafe power limits. The advantage of MagSafe is that it hitting the cable will release the cable from the machine, not so much with USB-C. Using USB-C also occupies a port whereas MagSafe does not.

I have charge my MacBook with USB-C because my MagSafe was in another room. It was just easy to use. 99.9% of the time I charge with MagSafe.

When I am traveling I use my MacBook to charge my iPhone and Watch. I use a USB-C to USB-C cable and connect them both to my MacBook while the MacBook is charging via MagSafe. I only need one charger and a couple of extra cables. Much less to carry and it works just fine.

Thanks for thr advice Ray and everyone else.

I've just ordered the 70w charger along with the Magsafe cable.

I'm hoping the 70w charger will be a fair bit lighter than the cable that came with the Mac. And from what you mentioned about having free USB C ports, agreed that the Magsafe make more sense.

I like this charger from Apple. It fits nicely in my case. Small, lightweight. Not the faster charger but does very well for an overnight charge.

Apple Charger

I also have a couple of Anker chargers which work really. One piece of advice is to get a charger with folding plugs. You may not be in the U.S. which may make folding plugs not a viable option.

Will this charge a 16" whilst it's being used (nothing more than surfing and MS apps)?

As long as the workload is light it should charge the machine. It did on my M4 Pro 14". I was just looking at the web, email, and working on a document. It will be a slow charge, perhaps taking several hours. Surfing and MS Apps are not big workloads. Watching video, rendering video, playing games are large workloads.

Thanks again Ray. I ordered the 70w charger earlier and too late to cancel the order. But so long as the 70 is noticeably lighter and smaller than the standard brick, I'm happy.

You will like it. It is not too large at 70 watts and is not nearly as large as the 96 watt or that monster 140 watt. Anker makes smaller chargers is about their only advantage. The Apple ones are well built. Enjoy your charger.
