What memory can I use on 2008 iMac?

I bought a 3.06Ghz iMac when they first came out in April/May 2008. At the time I bought a 4GB RAM kit and all has been fine until now.

I installed Snow Leopard and went to "About This Mac" and maybe its new or I haven't spotted it before but it says my RAM is 4GB 800MHz DDR2 SDRAM. I thought I had 4GB of 1066MHz RAM but obviously not.

I ran the system scanner from Crucial and that recommends the RAM I have installed but I thought when the iMac's came out I was able to run DDR3 1066MHz RAM.

Can anyone clarify this or tell me what I can actually run on this machine?

6GB of 800MHz DDR2 is your max amount

Yeah, the 1066 is the DDR3 RAM which your system doesn't support.

As mentioned above, you can unofficially run 6Gb of 800mhz DDR2, with 4Gb being the official max.

If you used the 6Gb though, you will lose the Dual Channel speed bump, so unless you really need the extra 2Gb, it may not be worth it.
