What model is this?

Hey, sorry, newbie style question.
i've just been handed an iBook, and although i know what model's and things are with desktops, I've looked at the iBook info and can't work out which it is.

it's about 14" it's white (like the G4's) but it has metal on the inside (like a powerbook)

I'm assuming it's a G3 iBook, but does it have a longer name?

it's apparently running 800MHz with 384mb RAM
which sounds painfully useless although it seems to run Adobe CS fine *shrug*

any further info/help?

I did, but all it told me was

MAC OS X
version 10.3.9

processor 800MHz PowerPC

Memory 384MB SDRAM

it looks just like my G4 iBook, but inside it's all silver, quite nice, but i'm guessing ancient inside.

I'm not sure to be honest. I just quickly wikied it to find out what model it was. I'll have a look around.

Yep, they did have the internal metal case. You might want to have a look at this link.

I think they were. There were two generations of iBooks like this... the "dual USB" that had a 12.1" screen, and then followed with the 14" model in 2002. You can look them up on Apple-History.com

I think the transparent-ish keyboard is a dead giveaway to the G3 iBook.... The G4 iBook launched with the darker, opaque keys.

The last gen of G3 iBooks was in mid 2003, followed by the G4 iBook in October of that year; since yours is 800MHz, it came from one of the last two updates of the iBook G3 (it went from 700/800 Mhz to 800/900 options). I'm not sure how to tell which of the two revisions it is, though. I think, if it has a 30GB HD, it's probably the earlier revision, from 2002, and if it has a 40GB HD, it's probably the later one. But I could be wrong about that.

you are indeed correct this one appears to be the early 2003 iBook "800" from the 700/800 line(announced Nov 2002) which has a 30GB hard drive

the next upgrades in April 03 led to the 800/900 line which featured a 40GB drive.

so it's a officially 3 years old, that makes it sound useless, but so far it seems to cope fine, not as fine as my G4 but more than good enough for a freebie.

i'm sorry?

if you mean the expanded iBook logic board repair extension program situation, then the website advises

"The program is available for certain iBook G3 models (see below for a complete list) with serial numbers in the following range:

UV117XXXXXX to UV342XXXXXX "

The one I have starts RM252 so I assume i'm fine.
