I've been doing research on which canon compact camera to buy , and it seemed like the SD880 was the best overall- good zoom range (has the widest angle, too) decent shutter speed, and a great 3.0 inch screen. However, since it's an "old" model it's really hard to get anywhere. What "newer" canon model has all of the great features of the SD880?

I don't care about the card-clogging mexapixels but I do care about the wide angle and zoom, the big screen, etc.

umm... the sd990? I got my wife the sd880 as a mothers' day gift, it's a fine point and shoot. I heard the 990 is just a tad better.

As much as I hate to be skeptical, I think the 990 is a marketing gimmick. It has 15 megapixels, a worse zoom range (7.7-28.5 as opposed to 5.0-20 on the 880) a slower shutter speed and only a 2.5 inch screen. And, it sells for more money.

One can't just look at focal lengths without know the sensor size. As to the screen size, the SD990 does have an optical view finder; while the SD880 does not. In the end, the SD990 is aimed as a pocketable G10 with less of a wide angle zoom lens. The 15mp sensor on the G10/SD990 seems to get rave reviews from end users from the folks that have bought them from my shop...

The real replacement to the SD880 is SD960... the addition of HD movie capability reduced the screen size by .2" over the SD880. But the key benefit points shown on the Canon website make the SD960 worthy IMO:
