What new things can they do with the iMac in March/April?

And how likely do you think it is that we'll see a new one then? I'm considering putting my (I think it's) 6 months old 24" iMac up for sale next month in case we get a new one during March/April, but I'm not sure I should do so if the only improvements we're going to get is a slightly faster bus and a black one.

So, is there anything else that they might do with it to warrant an upgrade? I'm not looking for a performance boost or anything like that, I just prefer to sell my stuff early and pay the small price to upgrade rather than have it become less and less worth.

the only thing that I can think of besides a faster processor, and black is they could integrate some of the iPhone's touch features into leopard and put a touchscreen into the next iMac.

I've been wondering about where the iMac is heading myself, and multitouch would be an awesome direction. It would be tiresome on a desktop stand, but if the screen was a large tablet, the stand could house the optical drive and act as a charger/sync station. I don't know how likely this is for the short term though. I've always kind of thought of the iMac as the flagship, and hope to see some real innovation for it. I, like you am thinking of selling my 20" c2d with plans on buying the next great thing.

the only thing i see is maybe making the imac a lil slimmer i really dont think apples ready for full touch screen computers yet but maybe seeing a slimer display like apples curent monitor displays and of course faster but the rumors are saying that the new chips are only .16ghz than duo or something faster

I would be hugely impressed if apple made the iMac thinner than it allready is! If it even got close to macbook thinness by even a cm it would be amazing! I think they would be likely to get heat problems as with the MBP if they went this thin. The thing is though at its present thickness its hardly obtrusive! Higher quality iSights would be much appreciated also. maybe dual optical drive would be possible? one on each side perhaps.

I will also be selling my 20" if new features arise. Im really hoping for a video in so I can hook up my 360 to my iMac. I was playing resident evil 4 in bootcamp last night and its beautiful on the 20" widescreen. Oh please let there be a video in

An updated graphics card is expected in the next revision. I'd like to see a megapixel iSight too.

I think it is worth noting that a form change is not too far off in the distance. I don't think it will come in the next update to the iMac, as they just released the 24" models, and will probably update the entire line once or twice before they move onto a new form, but we have to keep in mind this version of the iMac has been around for over two years now.

For some, it is getting a little long in the tooth. I'm sure Apple has a new model in some sort of beta form that will be released sometime in 2007.

One thing that would be huge is to put a real USB hub in the keyboard. Practically nothing works in the keyboard USB ports.

Getting rid of the "chin" would be nice -- that's more important than making it thinner, imho.

I'd like to see a more adjustable display.

More space for RAM.

And I second the idea of a video card upgrade.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Newport!

Intel is a really innovative player and in Apple it saw a friend and true!

Intel has a lot of technology awaiting credible application and Apple lead implementation where others follow.

The modern iMac is born of laptop technology and much of the queue of new tech awaiting application on the next MBP is there for the iMac too.

One of these is I believe Newport!

I think, along with other breaking technology such as PMR hard drives, Newport will allow the iMac to link up to Apple TV whilst asleep!!!

I too would love this feature... I would love to hook up my 360 to a new 24in imac... playing in 1080 P...

I hope a new 24 in imac will be here before summer... I am so ready to spend our tax return... For a little while I was tempted on getting a Dell with a 24 in LCD screen...

With regards to the OP's specific situation, it seems a bit rash to sell an almost-new computer for the hope of a new iMac in the next 2 months; we've just had pretty reliable news that Intel's Santa Rosa platform is likely to be ready in May, and I think most would agree that the next notable iMac update won't happen until a (hopefully) reliable SR chipset is available to Apple in large quantities. Back when we thought SR wasn't coming out 'til September, some sort of useful iMac spec/price upgrade before fall seemed likely, but with this news I see the iMac undergoing only minor changes, if any, until a line of Leopard-running SR monsters comes our way, maybe June-ish. Besides, unlike the #@$%ing minis, the top three iMac models are still good values despite being chronologically ready for updates, so I don't think Apple ought to be in a hurry to move on them.

And as others have pointed out elsewhere, great new hardware is likely to wait until Leopard is done, although that could always be sooner than we think . So I say enjoy your 24" and get ready for some fun this summer...

Yeah, I'm tired of waiting too...it's really past time. I can't believe it's March! It seems like just yesterday the quote of the day was "new minis by January, if not macworld than right after," and then it was "early February," followed by the February 20th myth...we will now test the March rumors .

Well, "Newport" itself is a futuristic laptop demo designed by Intel - that's always on, seamlessly connected to the internet, and capable of running a working day!

So, centred around better power management and additional flash memory - you could scroll through e-mails, access a calendar and other basics via a small secondary display and a four-button interface.

Great for laptops! Yes, but there's a cross over technology there so if your iMac needn’t be turned fully on and could wirelessly beam content to the Apple TV (a secondary display being the TV) - that would be perfect!
