What OS X software?

Now that I am awaiting my delivery of the 15" G4 I ordered on Tuesday, I have this slight problem: I need to switch from OS 9 to OS X. Unfortunately, this looks to be almost as expensive as if i were switching from Windows since all my software is OS 9. I looked at all of my software to pick out the key programs that look to be "I really need" items to upgrade. Those are as follows:

MS Office 2001 (office/productivity suite)
Adobe PhotoDeluxe 2.0 (a basic photo editing program)
Corel PrintSuite Deluxe (a publishing program)

I don't have much money now so I am looking into a cost effective solution, but I have in mind two upgrades which are

MS Office v.X ($150 )
Adobe Photoshop Elements ($60 I think)

I am also thinking about getting Keynote (another $90) and whatever else I find to do pamphlets, newsletters, etc. Are there any suggestions or even other software titles that anyone out there likes and considers "must have"?

If you just want to spend money, then I agree. However, you should consider running your current applications in Classic until you can afford to upgrade. You should also consider shareware and freeware alternatives to your favorite commercial apps.

Try OpenOffice.org for an office suite (still runs under X11, but is good, stable and free).
Your new machine may not run in Classic as fast as you might like, but it should be quick enough for Office applications.

As for your office situation, i'd recommend either appleworks or ThinkFree Office. TFO offers Office file compatibility in native office formats, though it's a bit slow. $49.95. Free trial.

You can get elements with a student discount for $44.95 from academic superstore

As for page layouts, i might recommend getting FreedHand MX. It does multiple pages and can output in PDF for any printing you might wanna do. It's $95.95 for the academic version from here



Since you just bought a PB, you can get keynote for $79.99

I can only recommend against Thinkfree Office. I bought it in the hope of getting rid of office, but it's slow, doesn't do footnotes and the handling drove me nuts... so I sold it on eBay.

I don't know about Open Office, but don't get TFO... MS sucks, but IMO Word and Exel are the best right now.

Yeah, as much as I hate the overall stability of MS products (the only software that ever causes my PowerBook to crash), Word is so far the best word processor I've used. I looked into just getting Word, but the difference between the standalone version and the whole Office suite is $20! AppleWorks is pretty cheap, but the word processor is really annoying to use (at least it was when I got it back in 99). I will probably get Elements, think about Keynote, and just think about getting Office for now. I will be using it practically everyday since I have *lots* of papers to do for my classes and using a slow word processing program would severely decrease my ability to live with doing my papers.
