What phone to learn Android?

After being a long term iPhone and windows phone user, I would like to try something in the Android world. Is a Moto G a decent Android phone to learn the OS on? Would I be better served by buying something with higher specs? I really want something that will showcase the OS. I wanted to stick with something new from the store as I have had horrible luck with used electronics.

I am on ATT and use a PC for my home computer. My music is in iTunes but I have almost zero movies bought through Apple.

Moto G is a very good android phone for the price.

Moto g is a great choice

The 2014 model does not have a lte version yet, however the 2013 model does.

2013 Moto x is also a great budget choice if you can find one. They have been blowing them out lately at various outlets.

2014 moto g, or, as I've just obtained, a used 2013 moto x.

Absolutely loving the x myself, even more so than my Nexus 5 which I'm surprised about.

The x is a better device to the g thanks to the display, touchless controls, 4g and 2gb of ram for me.

Anyway back to the question. I'd go with a 2013 Moto X. You can get a brand new 32GB unlocked one for $229 - if you don't want that, get a used one for around $160 online.

Depends on your budget.

If you want to go REALLY cheap, you can pick up a LG Optimus Fuel right now for $9 a piece (sears, kmart, walgreens, etc). Mind you, it's a crappy phone, but it runs kit-kat 4.4.2, and is a good phone for to test your app's performance on very low-end hardware.

I'd personally suggest just picking up a Moto G, especially since there are black friday deals going on (Walmart will have the Verizon prepaid version for $39.99 this weekend).

Alternatively, you could pick up a bad ESN galaxy Nexus for $30-$40. I'd only suggest doing so if you miss out on the Moto G.

If you want to kick it up a notch, you could try to get your hands on a used Galaxy Note 3 ($300-$400), or a new One Plus One. Or even better, buy a Nexus 5. The Nexus series are meant to be developer phones, after all. The only major benefits to the Note and One Plus One over the Nexus are battery life and camera quality.

The version that att stocks near me is the first gen with LTE.

Does everyone who recommend the Moto G still recommend it if its the first gen? This will be just a phone to experiment with and not a daily driver.

The only difference between the first gen and second gen is the screen size so you'd be fine with that model.

Went down and looked at the G and X. Decided to go with the G and am pleasantly surprised for the price. Decent screen and pretty fast too. Much better than I expected.

I'm looking forward to learning all it can do.

It should be getting the update in the next few weeks. Should be arriving shortly.
