After years of holding out, I'm finally getting a cell phone. I was wondering if people had any advice on what phone to get. I'm going with Cingular, as it's free to talk to other Cingular people and the majority of my friends use them, so it will be cheapest. I've heard Sony Ericsson and Nokia are the best, and to stay away from Moto.

Things I care about:
Good UI
Quality sound / unit
Won't break easy
Occasionally take pictures of stuff, not as a real camera
Maybe listen to the radio, not as a music player (got my iPod for that)
Possibly sync with my powerbook for Calendar or something? (bluetooth preferred)

Things I don't care about:
E-mail
Web browsing (I'm assuming I pay more for this. If not, put it in things I would care about)
Text messaging
IM'ing
capturing movies
sending pictures to people
mp3 (or whatever format) music player

Can anyone help me with suggestions?

I loves me some Treo 650. It is so itty bitty stupid, yo.
True dat. ;)

OT: How is reception in your area? Some phones are notoriously bad in low-strength areas.

I have a SE K750i which is great, but to be honest I'm not really impressed with any mobile phone I've ever owned. Don't get me wrong, the K750i is a great, reliable phone but it's not very impressive. Quite boring actually. Or maybe it's just the calls I make on it! :p

Apple should start designing mobile phones. It's part of the gadget industry that needs a good kick up the ass.

I think the Treo gets slightly poorer reception than my last phone, an LG VX6100, but not by much. Verizon is by far the superior network in my area (Northern Maryland).

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll start looking into those phones in more detail.

As for the questions people asked:

the reception in my area is pretty good, no one I know has had problems with it.

I'd like to stay around or under 200. If it's a little over, that's fine. I'd rather not pay $400 for a phone, though.

I just get all of my phones free. The way to get a great deal is to get a decent phone on a $20-$30 a month plan. My motorola v620 has most of the things in the list you had above and has been replaced by a newer model.

i got the treo 650... i love it... but i can't wait to get rid of it and get a nextel and a sidekick... but that's a different story...

it's super hardcore... i drop mine all the time when i get out of my car and hasn't broken once. it sync's great with computers... and the camera is pretty good for not even being 1 mega pixel... the clarity is awesome, i use speaker phone all the time and it sounds just as clear as holding againist your ear... plus its bluetooth.

nokia 6682/6680/6681

-80 and -82 are outside US.

nice camera, great sync with mac over bluetooth, smartphone features. pretty.
cingular sells them for less with contract, etc., but I've heard they restrict them so I'd get one unlocked if you can.

Thank you, it looks food. What do you mean by unlocked, though?

A lot of nokias have what you are looking for... It really depends on the carrier you are looking at. Let me know.

Sorry I missed that... Well I wouldnt swear off moto altogether, the RAZR would work for you and its pretty cheap these days. If you want to spend the dough the Nokia 6682 is sweet mut mighty expensive.
