Purely out of curiosity...

is there anyway to tell whether you are order # 50 or order # 100,000 based on invoice? order #?

Supposedly I believe the speculation on Apple iPad sales is based on your order number being in sequence. That is the ASSUMPTION.

But I feel that giving out my order number would be compromising...and hence not a good idea.

What would be interesting, is to see where the order number starts. If it starts at 0 or say 10,000. That would be more telling I think.

Well, certainly I would not advise anyone to post their order number either.

However, If I were to place an order for $10 gift card right now. I wonder if there were someway to subtract hard sales data on a day to day basis from the time I ordered an iPad to the time I ordered a $10 gift card to figure out what place I were in.

Just another thought. What about cancelled order numbers? If someone were able to collect a small group of cancelled order numbers and logged what time those order number were placed at. Then it would be somewhat plausible to generate a table let others know what their order number may equate to in position.

I placed my order at ~0535, so I'm not too worried about being last in line. ;)

This might help others gauge their position: my brother ordered theirs within ~10 minutes of mine (later) and our order numbers are separated by ~10,000.

So we can conclude (hypothetically) that between 5:35 and 5:45 that 10,000 iPad orders were placed?

My order was placed at 5:35 PST but I have no other order to compare it to.

Since we have no idea if the orders are sequential and no other idea how it is kept track of, I guess that is why those numbers are reported.

FWIW, I ordered mine 5:36 PST :D

Wondering too when our order status will be changed to SHIPPED!

Like the iPhone's it probably is shipping straight from China.

Maybe one week before April 3rd our iPads will ship?

Who's gonna stalk FedEx flights out of China/Alaska?

I'm sure there will the the typical tracking threads here. Last time (for the 3GS) they shipped on Wed for Fri delivery - all the way from China. So, I expect to see the shipment notice on Thursday (4/1).

I've posted this in the other 'order number extrapolation' thread, but my order was at 8:31, a friends at 8:36, and we were 6800 apart.

I know that with every different type of inventory software that I have worked with, sales transaction numbers have always been sequential (online order numbers usually start with a "W", for "Web"), so I would assume that Apple's software is the same. But those sequential numbers would include ALL transactions, not just iPads. For instance, if someone ordered an iPhone accessory during all the iPad orders, it would have a transaction number in that sequence. It's highly probable that most orders Friday morning were for iPads, and very few orders for other things (most people who were on the Apple Store website that early in the morning were probably there specifically for the iPad).

since they are shipping overnight, i think they will ship from the US, not china . atleast i hope

you can't really rely on that, after all, maybe only 1000 units were sold between those times, while 10,000 units were ordered on 5:36PST

Sheesh, people are so paranoid... If you're really concerned, just change the last two digits in your order and post that. It'll be close enough for the purposes of the OP.

Here's how it works, I think, according to the clever people who have been tracking this.

The key numbers are the last five digits of your order number. But apparently the numbering started at 16000, so you subtract that to get your approximate ranking.

Two qualifiers:

• Some of the order numbers are almost certainly for non-iPad products sold the same day.

• Some people ordered MORE than one iPad.

These two things would tend to cancel each other out -- except that, based on the chatter around the net, I'd guess that the multiple-iPad orders exceed the other-product orders.

Anyway, I'm around #2500 for the day.

Hmm, I think I can dispute this because that math leaves me at a negative number.

(My last five digits are 15XXX, 8:31 order)

Unless I am misunderstanding. I frequently suffer from math fail.

my order was in at 5:33... looks like I'm at about 3,000th or so. Not too shabby, I guess. Not that it matters really, I'm sure we'll all get them on launch day.

My order is about 300 before yours? I'll sell ya my spot for 50 bucks! hehehe..
WHo cares what the order number is. I think some people have way to much time on their hands, and since I'm wasting my time responding, I must be one of them.
;)

Based on past pre-orders of other products, they don't ship in order. I remember several people complaining when someone that ordered after them got a shipping notice before they did.

There are likely several factors involved: Geography,Order Placement, iPad only or iPad plus accessories etc.

Did anyone get the two day shipping? I was surprised that it was on there, maybe if you purchase that that would also bump you to the front shipping que?
