What printer does everyone use?

I am starting to get more and more into printing my own pictures. I have a ovviceje pro 8610, but really want to upgrade my printer quality for photos.

I have a nikon d7100 - so the camera is there, just no the printer.

I figured this was the best forum since it involved photography.

To print up to what size, and how good a print quality do you want? I use a Canon Pixma Pro 1 that can do up to A3+ 13x19. Because of the several black and gray pigment inks, it does B&W as we'll as it does color. And the clear optimizer it applies evens out the surface so you don't the hills and valleys look that is common with some inkjet printers.

I agree with MCAsan. The Canon Pixma printers are outstanding. I have the Pro-10, and it's awesome. The Pro-100 would be a good one for you to look at and possibly purchase. It's usually discounted and the prints it makes are fantastic.

Last year I replaced my old Canon Pixma MP640 with a Canon Pixma MG7520. The MG7520 allows me to connect via USB, ethernet, or wirelessly. It has a touch screen menu, card slot, NFC, and CD/DVD printing. So far I really like it. On my previous printer it didn't exactly give me borderless printing. The MG7520 however does an awesome job printing borderless photos even when printing from Lightroom or Preview. My clients love the images I print. Very high quality.

I like that Canon removed the back tray and put it in the front. Before my back tray I used to house my photo paper. Now it sits nicely in the top tray in which I can switch out easily. I stuck with the Pixma cause the images are really nice and so far the images that I've printed have lasted a long time.

I'm shooting Nikon D750 and D90 and image quality is basically what I see on the Mac after editing in LR.

Down side is that the ink cost $$. It uses a 6 ink system. That's not a huge problem because I use the recycle ink program at the office stores. The MG7520 has been discountiued. The MG7720 is it replacement.

I rarely print pictures at home. As a consequence printer inks would dry up. I decided that my Xerox color laser was good enough for most needs and I can use outside services to get the sizes I want cheaper then dealing with a decent photo printer.

The Pixma is nice and does print good photos, BUT I rarely use it as it simply (and completely) DEVOURS the ink like I've never seen. Unless buying ink is no big thing, cost-wise, than this is a great printer. Buying a really good printer for less money is no longer the issue these days (case in point: my old all-in-one Epson cost around $500 circa 2002 versus my 2014 Pixma was about $100 - both roughly equal in picture quality). However, that low printer cost seems to be offset by how they consume ink, which has become ridiculous and more and more expensive. Canon, albeit really good, seems exceptionally skilled at making up the difference (and then some) via ink sales and the amount their printers need. I find this quite frustrating, but each to his own, i guess.

I have the Epson Artisan 810 for general purpose all-in-one use. Then got the Epson V850 scanner and P600 printer for high-end photo use. Been playing around with Light Room and PhotoShop and printing some really fine pictures...taken with my iPhone 6s+.

Yeah I can't remember where I saw it but someone said Printer companies have this monopoly on us. The cost of the printer is cheap while the ink cost more than the printer. smh

The first time I printed with cartridges from the store the ink went really fast. So I looked at my settings because I wasn't printing a lot of photos. I had printed mostly invitations and other paper products. What I found was that the color was going fast even though I was printing mostly B&W. So this is what I did. I selected the B&W box that's next to Copy in the Print Window whenever I'm printing from the web (receipts, pages) or stuff I've typed. So far the ink isn't going fast as before.

There are several stores that have the ink recycle program. So far this year I've received about $30 back. I've used that to buy stuff in the stores. Yes it is frustrating but I find a way to make money off of the images that I print.

It's mostly for small prints. 4X6 and that area. up to 8X12. I have heard about the printer you have and was thinking of getting that exact one. I have found some good deals on it so far. I have also looked at the pro 100 and it seemed to have gotten great reviews as well.

I agree with MCAsan. The Canon Pixma printers are outstanding. I have the Pro-10, and it's awesome. The Pro-100 would be a good one for you to look at and possibly purchase. It's usually discounted and the prints it makes are fantastic.

The higher quality inkjet printers use pigment inks, not dye inks. Also they have more ink colors to work with giving a much better chance of producing high quality prints. In inkjet printers, price and print quality are definitely related. Many people who want a few high quality images printed use an external print service as they do not have the business case for spending $500 or more on a printer they need for a few prints per year.

So much depends on the size of prints you want, the quantity of the prints, the quality of prints, and are you prepared to do color management between you monitor and the printer so that what you see on the screen is what comes out of the printer. Printing small poor quality images is cheap and easy. Printing high quality images, at any size, has a learning curve and price tag.

MCAsan addressed this very well. The main upgrades on more expensive printers are better quality (archival) inks, and more individual ink tanks, as well as a wider array of possible paper types and sizes.

A Cannon MG6300. Works really well. Previously I had a similar priced Epson that gave me nothing but issues. Every time I went to use it it was blocked or heads needed realigning. This one works wirelessly with my Mac and iPads. I get the inks from Amazon, and check when they are on offer to stock up. Use Tecco Lustre paper as its nice and gives me a look I like.

Pixma Pro 100. Huge discounts. B&H $149 after rebate and free paper. You cannot miss with this one. I spent the extra $100 for another set of cartridges but I have not even used half yet and have printed many, many photos. It is big and it is heavy.

Staples has buy 2 get one free. A few weeks ago they had buy 1 get one free. I like using the HP Premium paper. It's thicker than what Canon gives you inside the box with the ink or new printer.

I currently use a Brother HL-2170W, BW Laser, got it in college due to all the printing I was doing. I really like having a laser printer, I have yet to buy a second full cartridge for it.

Also as a side-note, it has a wireless and ethernet print server, has major issues on wireless, but the ethernet works great.

A laser is fine for printing text and graphics such as handouts or Word documents or spread sheets. But a laser is not going to high quality image printing using 4 colors. If you want high quality graphics printing, an inkjet with 8+ colors of ink is where you need to be. It all comes back to just how large an image you want, and how much quality you want in the print. And you will likely be looking at printers from Canon and Epson.

I understand you may just need to print 8x11, what about Epson C88+? it is an excellent printer for small print and very reliable.

I am using Epson SureColor P600 now and cant be happier. It's a big one not like C88+. I am also using a quality 3rd party inks and refillable carts from inkrepbulic like this

For any color printer, I would stay with Epson, not Canon at this moment. Epson still makes the best inkjet printer IMHO.

Well, I also got sick and tired of spending $$ on ink cartridges.
Why the heck are there not good quality ink jet printers that let the end user simply refill them?

Sure, I've done the "hack" of drilling my empty inkjet cartridges, then filling them, then using a chip reset device.
Who has not here?

I'm talking about a more robust, consumer friendly refillable ink jet solution.
Oh wait, that will erode major revenue/profit scheme, so Canon/HP/Epson/etc won't do that...

To heck with it, I now send what photos I want printed for show to a local printer, and instead bought 2 laser jet printers for household printing that a family of 6 with 4 kids ages 16/13/11/9 need.
