For example, Tinder just did it this morning, for no particular reason, having never done so before, and I can't think of a reason it would need it, or what could trigger it. I think Signal did once but that was specifcally for transferring messages I believe.
 
Hmmm, I wonder why it didn't ask for it as soon as the app was updated, but waited a week.

The permission requests usually only trigger when the feature is used for the first time. Unless it was a new app update and they added that in the new version.
 
Just can't think what Tinder would even need that access for, and why just opening the app caused it.
