Obviously the 3GB RAM in the iPad 9 might be good for now but in 3 years maybe websites are heavier on pictures and such and there will be a lot of reloading.

Still, I’ve seen people on the forums saying that with 4GB (iPad Air 4) there’s still more reloading than desirable.

So, is iPad Pro with 8GB RAM the only way to ensure great internet experience with Safari for 5 years? Just like with a laptop, being able to have many tabs open without reloading or at least not with heavy websites full of pictures.

What a great experience is is subjective, but in general yes, even my 6GB iPad pro reloads more than I would like... So I would say 8GB at least if you want to keep quite a few tabs open and minimize reloads over periods of several days or even weeks. And since iPadOS 15 seems to take more RAM than 14, I cannot even rule out that future updates will take even more RAM and cause reloads on 8GB devices too in 4-5 years...

I can’t understand how with laptops 8GB is sufficient for having dozens of tabs open in the background without reloading but with tablets it’s different.

If 6GB in the Pro is not enough to have let’s say 6 tabs opened without reloading then I don’t see much point in spending the extra bucks for the M1 when in 2 years it will perform worse.

Such a dilemma. Maybe I should just go with the basic iPad and save money to upgrade again in 3/4 years.

Because, as I explained in another thread today, the iPad cannot swap to disk (=use the SSD as additional RAM). So the actual RAM is all the RAM you have, no way to increase it. As simple as that
