Someone who will remain un-named for obvious reasons emailed me this morning from Apple with the following explanation:

IN short Apple's secrecy backfired and the Mac Mini is currently being looked for.

The project has seen several revisions and has even had it's internal product code name changed. It started off as simply "mini x" but because so many resources were spent on iPhone the code name was changed to "Mac Later" . After intel was close to finalizing it's new laptop chip, Apple put all it's resources into Macbook Air, so the Mini code name was changed again to "Mac Maybe".

Currently the majority of resources are being poured into updating other products in the line up and especially OS 10.6 plus working on a 3rd generation iPhone that will maintain a lead over the stiffening competition. SO the mac mini internal project code is currently "Mac Who", however the only person familiar with the the project is the guy who's job is solely to come up with code names, since he's the only one working on it.

At this point many of the departments within Apple have lost track of what code name is being used, and most never even knew there was a guy who works at Apple who gets paid to come up with code names. There is now a different code name depending on what department you talk to and no one really has much more than just the name.

It's actually now become just an inside office joke to see who can come up with the best code name for Mac Mini. Some of the names floating around are "Mac Attack" , "Mac Bigfoot" , "Where's Waldo" and last month's winner "Page not found 404"

Some serious insiders now believe they've simply been cut out of the loop and even the guy who's job is solely to come up with code names fears he may have been replaced and is only being paid to cover keep the new guy a secret.

Apple's secrecy has begun to backfire and we are now contemplating creating a new secret secret department to investigate our own secrecy and find out what happened to the Mac Mini project.

Sincerely,
True Story

Oh god... ;) I thought they just had a mishap with the mac micromini and interns were running arround with magnifying lenses looking for the prototype

So we have scenario 1: The Mac mini got lost, left behind in the rush of iPhones and 10.6, and there's noone at Apple that's doing anything about it.

And scenario 2: this is just to cover up a new secret department working on it so it will be a surprise for everyone when it's announced.

I have my two cents on #1, but I'm hoping for #2. In any case I'm glad I got my mini last year just a couple of months after they got spec-bumped.

Apple lost the Mac mini

. . . but don't despair because macrumors has found multiple new threads on the mini.

small m, by the way.
