Thanks. I so hope one of them up in MacBook air. Although I guess the turbo boost will be capped by heat.

I think they're designed with limited heat dissipation in mind, so I don't think that would be a huge issue. They're only 17W processors, so they run pretty cool to begin with.

I suspect these are the 11 inch processors, as they have a TDP of 17 watts. For the 13 inch they may go as high as the 2.3GHz i7-2649M at 25 watts.

A quick look at Geekbench scores for the 13 inch MBP suggests overall performance would almost double (though GPU dependent games may not gain the same benefit).

Based on prices and power consumption, here are my guesses on the Sandy Bridge processors that will be in the machines.

11" MBA Base CPU:
Intel® Core™ i5-2537M Processor (Dual Core, 1.4 GHz(2.3GHz turbo) 3M Cache)

11" MBA BTO CPU:
Intel® Core™ i7-2657M Processor (Dual Core, 1.6 GHz(2.7GHz turbo) 4M Cache)

13" MBA Base CPU:
Intel® Core™ i7-2629M Processor (Dual Core, 2.1 GHz(3.0GHz turbo) 4M Cache)

13" MBA BTO CPU:
Intel® Core™ i7-2649M Processor (Dual Core, 2.13 GHz(3.2GHz turbo) 4M Cache)

I don't think we'll see an i7 in the base 13in MBA, just like how we don't see an i7 in the base 13in MBP. The i7 is an incentive to upgrade, which is an easy way to skim some extra profits off the top of any purchase.

EDIT: But then again, it doesn't look like there are any other decent spec'd i5s at 25W (aka none)... so maybe. We'll find out soon enough I guess!

and the name 'i7' means what exactly?

Are the new Mac mini's destined to have intel's 3000 GPU in them paired with the sandy bridge processors? It is my understanding that this is the case for the newly refreshed MBA's.

My reason for asking is because I am slightly tired of dealing with carrying around a 15" MBP. I also dont always have my streaming content available for my iPads/iPhones/Apple TV if the laptop is off. I miss having a computer running non-stop with the streaming content/documents always there.

I was wanting to run a mac mini at home with all of my content on it and trade out my 15" MBP for an 11" or 13" new MBA refresh to carry out with me. I could carry around the necessities locally but stream media from the mac mini at home (all content right now is currently on my MBP obviously) The problem is that I do play WoW and SCII occasionally so I would like to still be able to play those (preferably on the mac mini with my external monitor). If the new mac mini and MBA will both have the same specs (nearly) then there is probably little reason to do this.

Thoughts?

A very simple Google search for "i7" returned the Intel i7 home page as the first result and the Wikipedia article about the i7 as the second result.

You can try what I described above here http://www.google.com

Cool, dude!

So what does it say there? (I'm not too sure how those clicky link things work, with the h and the t and the other t and on and on)

anyways, I'm pretty sure it says:

'inherently better and faster than i5'

am I right???

Lurning is phun!!!

You should totally become a teacher, man!!!

By the way, the question originally posed to KyleP was meant a bit more Socratically than sarcastically;

as for my response to brand, well, just putting it in his vernacular.

Yeah my guesses are based off currently available CPUs and their relative prices to the ones currently in use. It's possible we'll see something new that intel will release soon. Those i7s are a tiny bit more expensive than the C2Ds in the current Airs, but they're what's available.

All in good fun.

OK

... anyways, there are i3s, i5s, and i7s across power ranges. ix increases in x within a power category, but aside from that, as far as I can tell, the names mean nothing; (sometimes they are distinguished by features like HT and TB and sometimes they aren't)

... OMG. Wait. "i(blank)" ? Where have I seen that before???

AAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!

buahaha... in terms of their mobile line - despite the names being rather arbitrary - I think the main difference between an i7 and an i5 (all things equal), is the L3 cache (4MB vs 3MB, respectively).

How that affects computing performance is probably marginal by any means, but... 7 > 5, so we should all want the former n_n

... yeah, cache seems to be it. The i5s are all 3M. The i7s are more (4M, 6M, 8M).

Then again, all the i3s are 3M too.

But yeah, i7 - i5 = i2 = 2i, so i7 is sqrt(-4) better than i5, which means more sexy ladies, which means more betterrer universes. Agreed!

Sorry for hijacking your thread a bit TS but I just had to ask this and feel that this doesn't warrant it's own thread.

From notebookcheck

ULV processors Core ix-2xx7 (base 350MHz, Turbo 900-1000MHz)

LV processors Core ix-2xx5 (base 500MHz, Turbo 1000MHz)

Mainstream and high-end Dual und Quad-Core Core ix-2xx0 (base 650MHz, Turbo 1100-1200MHz)

For the benchmarks ran for the HD3000 in the 2011 MBPs, are they turbo boosted.

People here are saying that the HD3000 would be a downgrade from the 320m, and that the 320m was on par with the MBP HD3000, and the ULV version would be worse because it is downclocked at 350Mhz v 650Mhz. But in turbo boost mode I guess the difference would be much less.

Thoughts?

No, I don't think you have accounted for the new clock speed increase. Take a look at the article linked in this thread http://hitechanalogy.com/intel’s-new-ulv-sandy-bridge-processors-to-fit-in-next-macbook-air/
