Title. I got a maxed out 16 in m1 max 64gb macbook pro back in april. Anyone have ideas how to use all this performance? And if you ask why I bought it even though I absolutely don't need the performance, it's because I could and wanted to.

Anyways, I've tried a few things, like putting several short 8k red videos into final cut, and that ran decent, and I've tried some large render benchmarks in blender. However, blender is terribly optimized right now as it only uses about 18 watts out of the 45 watts the m1 max gpu is capable of.

Also, I tried some apple arcade games, the pathless was a blast and definitely utilized the m1 max gpu performance and ran really well.

So anyone have any other suggestions of how to unleash this beast that I haven't tried yet that would be interesting and fun, and free?

Benchmarks and video editing are about the only thing I can think of. It sounds like you bought a computer you didn’t need and now trying to find a use case for it. Video editing is great but if you don’t record videos or have no interest in that field it’s kind of boring. The same with benchmarks. I mean you can run a benchmark 100 times but it’s just going to give you the same result without much satisfaction. I know computer builders like to run benchmarks just to brag online about their overclock but yours is just going to benchmark like any other 16” M1.

My suggestion is use it for the purposes that you need it for. It’s kind of like buying a sports car that can go 200 MPH but that doesn’t mean you have to drive it at 200 MPH. It’s just as fun to drive at lower speeds.

Don’t get me wrong I don’t mean you shouldn’t have bought it because even if you don’t need the processing power it’s still a really nice laptop and that screen is pretty amazing at least from the display models I’ve seen. I almost bought one but I really don’t want to spend the money 😂
