What should I request for Christmas?

I know, there is already a thread out there on this topic, but I wanted everyone's opinion here on a few things. I have about a $100 limit total on whatever I get, so that rules out a lot of COOL stuff.

-- I was thinking, since I won't have money anytime soon for Leopard, I could get that. My sister could pick it up for my mom from the school bookstore for $89. I'm just not certain I want that as cool as it may be. It can wait, if you know what I mean.

-- I was also thinking the KERN jacket from Veer was looking mighty nice. If I don't get that, I just might be buying it myself with my Christmas bonus from work. :D

-- Another passion of mine is cooking, though I rarely do it. I might like a nice set of industrial grade pans and pots. I could get a couple pans and pots for about that price.

-- I know a lot of people have mentioned books for designers, but not too many specific books. Someone mentioned Thinking with Type, but I'm currently reading that one (checked out from the school library). Are there any other specific design books that would be good for a beginner?

Are there any other items that might be nice for a beginning designer for around $100 or less? Any cool gadgets that a designer might need? I need to get this list over to my mom's house tomorrow sometime so she can start shopping. What ideas do YOU people have?

Depends what kind fo designer u are and what u'll be designing - you can get a wacom bamboo for around a hundred bucks.
 
Tell them to give you cash or let you contribute money to the gift, then you can match their $100 with some money of your own and get something even nicer than what you alone or just the gift money alone could reach separately.

i second the bamboo. I'm getting one of those vor chirstmas.

As far as books, i'm getting a bunch of those for xmas as well.

I'm asking for:
"Neubau Welt"
"Soak Wash Rinse Spin"
"How to be a graphic designer without losing your soul"
"Cabinet of Natural Curiosity"

Ok, the last isn't a "designer" book, but it is a beautiful book to look at. Also, any of the "index" books by Krausse are good (ie. Idea Index, Layout Index, Color Index, Type Idex, Design Basics Index, etc...)

other suggestions:
cool t-shirts (fullbleed, spraygraphic, artefacture, etc...)
fonts
magazine subscriptions (communication arts, print, I.D., HOW, CMYK, etc..)

Ok, most likely going into design with more of a print background. I'm 25 and have a couple more years of school left.

As far as the iPod Nano, I'll pass. I just got a 5.5g 80gb for that price, brand new. I don't need another iPod.

Is the bambo really that great of a tablet? I mean, at that price it kinda has me wondering. Anyone used one?

there are infinite books you should get, so its impossible to narrow it down to the right ones to get as a beginner, but i would look at (too lazy to amazon link these):

type, image, message - skolos+wedell
i am almost always hungry - cahan + associates
no more rules: graphic design and postmodernism - rick poynor
it is beautiful then gone - martin venezky

and if you are a cook - the french laundry cookbook.

I've only read one review and it was favorable. It wasn't from CNET either ;). That seems like a good gift over Leopard actually. Books are great but see if any of the books you want is at the library. Reading through them first is key because if this is your area of study you'll undoubtedly collect a ton of books over the next few years.
 
If you're heading into design with a focus on print, get a Pantone book. This is a must have. I'd aim for the one that has both coated and uncoated stock in one book. I don't know the market price, but you can always get one on eBay brand spanking new for under $100.
 
Hmm...seems my post earlier didn't make it through. I'm not so sure I'm as sold on a Wacom tablet as everyone else seems to be.

I am not so sure I like the Bamboo or Bamboo Fun all that much. I'd much rather have the Intuos 6x11 if I were to get a Wacom. Maybe even the Intuos 4x6. I'm wondering though, are those too small of a surface (the Bamboo and 4x6) to work with? I've never used a tablet and really have no clue what I'd need.

I was originally looking a the Chronometer but the price difference is getting me... In Australia the difference between the Quartz and Chronometer is around $1,000 which I would rather spend on a suit.

Good call. ;) Working at a high end jewelry store has kinda ruined me in the category of watches. I'd love a nice automatic watch.

Still quartz powered my friend. Instead of having a user replaceable battery, they put a rechargeable battery in.

I like how this has turned into a thread about watches.
