My camera has the following image sizes:

2592x1944
2048x1536
1600x1200
1280x960
1024x768

Which one do I select if I'm planing on making 4x6 prints?

If you are shooting from scratch, choose the highest one. That way you can enlarge if necessary. Having said that, my old 1.3 megapixel (1280x960) gave consistantly good resolution for 4x6 output.

I did find that higher resolution helped with low exposure noise in poorly lit environments. You have a new Nikon coolpix, no?

I'd use any of them but the bottom one, but, use the highest resolution one you can and still get enough pictures on your card.

Yes and thank you for your help. :)

So if I start with a high resolution, I can always shrink down in size without losing quality, but I cannot start from a low resolution, and expand without losing quality correct?

4x6 @ 300dpi would be 1800px x 1200 px. Anything above that should give you perfect prints. Slightly below would still be fine though.
