On a consumer level, these days we all have crazy amounts of data with photos and videos and larger storage needs than ever before. In a perfect world, I'd get the 8TB SSD so I can keep all my family videos and photos on the laptop without the hassle of carrying around an external SSD. An 8TB is hideously expensive for the average consumer and even if you had the money its a luxury that's kind of hard to justify.

Am I alone in thinking this?

I usually get the lowest and use ext drive(s). With my latest 14" starting at 500 GB, I don't think I'll even need an ext SSD except as a backup.

I got 1TB with mine. Allows a nice headroom should I need it. Although right now I am at 260GB...
What’s your situation though with personal photos and video etc? I have a lot because we have kids but then most young people must have loads because of all the selfies and videos they are taking constantly

I have a 200GB photo library. Mind you it is also backed-up in iCloud. Videos, I haven't checked. My picture library stems from 2007 when I first got the iPhone. So it's quite extensive.
