The only smart playlist that I actually use often is one I made called Unplayed. I think it's pretty self explanitory.

let's see...i have "unplayed"and "allpurchased" which is all the protected aac files i have. that's about it--i'm not a big fan of playlists, i prefer to just listen to a particular artist/album at a time.

I have a playlist for my shuffle that gathers up music that is any one of...

Played more than 3 times,
Rated higher than 3 stars,
Recently Added, or
Not played in the last week.

It's limited to 500mb's, live updating, and the preference is towards unplayed songs to break 'ties'. I then autofill my shuffle from that list, but I set it not replace all songs so I can load my current audio book on it, and then fill the rest of the space from that list.

I have some smart playlists that are more for maintenance functions; the only smart playlist I have for listening, besides the default most played one, is a playlist of my most listened to songs that I *haven't* listened to in at least two weeks.... I shuffle play that sometimes.

I have tons of Smart Playlists. Probably the most used one is Guitar - any song whose comment contain the words "guitar" and "instrumental" (yes, I tag them all when I import new music). Currently has 820 of my 4970 tracks. I also have playlists for:

200 Most Played
Bonus (anything I've tagged in comment as a bonus track of some kind)
Bootleg
Live
Studio
New In 2004
New In 2005
New In The Past Year
New This Month
New Last Month
Purchased From iTMS

Again, many are based on extra info I've put into the comment field (live recordings get the word "live", thus studio stuff doesn't have "live" in comment, etc). And for the ones above that I tend to play often, I have a "Fresh" version, which adds a criterion that Last Played is not in the last 2 weeks. I have many others but these are the most used/viewed.

i mostly use my smart playlists, and since making them have hardly used my other playlists.

i have
Last Play +1 week (songs that havent been played in the past week)
Not Played Yet (explains itsself)
Played today (yet again)
Top 25 most played

i use them mostly to keep a flow of music that i havent heard in a while going. then i can also easily find something ive already listened to today if i think about it later. then top 25 is for when i just want to hear some good songs. theres a reason its my top 25 most played, cause i like them a lot!!

then there is my infamous playlist that i made myself. titled "make-out" i guess its kinda self explanitory. works really well on my iPod or my computer, when a girl is over and i say, "you should look through my music and see if theres anything you like, or check out my playlits" youd be surprised at how often that works! ok, every once in a while girls laugh at it, but generally end up playing it anyway!!! O:) ah. . . what will i do after college?!?!?!?

this is my lists

my freind made one of those and he had like 200 songs on it some of them he had never even heard of

I use only one smart playlist it's called Newest Music. It contains all songs added to the library in past month. I dont play this playlist. Its more for organizing perpouses.

My Smart Playlists are mainly time/rating based.

I have my top rated tracks that excludes ones played in the last week and a top rated tracks that I haven't heard for 2 months one.

"Newly added" sounds like a good one though - I may add that to my list.

Same here. I have an "unrated" play list, which is basically anything I haven't listened to and rated. I also have a "top unplayed hits" list which is all the music with 4 or 5 stars (on my ratings) that I haven't listened to in 3 months or more. Then a bunch of genre-specific playlists (e.g., classic rock, modern rock, etc.) I have too much music to make regular playlists, so I have only a couple of those.

My Smart Playlists

Mine are these:

1950's Music
1960's Music
1970's Music
1980's Music
1990's Music
2000's Music
Last Two Months
Last Two Weeks

The last two refer to the dates tracks were imported.

I made one of those, too! Great for allowing me to rank my music... I'm obsessive about ranking my songs with those stars, BTW.

Good Songs (***-*****, Play Count: 1-10)
Top Rated (*****)
Recently Added (1 Month)
Recently Played (2 weeks)
Top 25 Most Played (duh!)
Top of the Top (Played 9+, Last Played in the past month, *****)

Then I have normal playlists of the songs that I use in FCE (have to convert them to WAV)
Shuffle playlist (list of songs on my Shuffle)
A playlist of songs I'm thinking about buying off of iTMS
