Hi

After 5 iMac 27" i7 recplacement with the same issue (Yellow Tinge) I've decided tro proceed to a total refund. So now i've about 2000 $ to buy an Apple Computer with comparable performance.

I do not think there is a good solution:

I Can buy a 15.4" i5 with and 24" Apple Cinema display but I would have lower performance, smaller screen, lower resolution for about 3000 $ (1000 $ more of iMac!!)

To have comparable iMac i7 performance should I buy a Mac Pro but how much cost a 27" monitor with the same resolution of the iMac 27" with LED backlit? can anyone help me? thanks!

I am in the same boat......going to send my 3rd Imac I5 back. I have the grinding sound and yellow tint on the right side. I am going to get a full refund as I am sick also. I love the imac but maybe should have worked all these bugs out.....

I am in the same boat (even had five i5 replacements..) I have been considering either a mini/24" Apple Cinema Display or a Mac Book Pro/"24 ACD.. I tried to justify spending the extra $1000 on a Mac Pro/24" ACD combo, but just could not spend over $3000 right now..

Bottom line, here were the options I was considering:

1) Mini/24" ACD - love the monitor, the mini is very responsive, but when using the full image screen in iPhoto (clicking the box in the bottom left that brings images to full screen), the mini had a small amount of difficulty in presenting each photo as I scrolled through them (kind of a small stuttering, not a smooth transition like on the iMac..) Apple store folks said that is due to a combo of the processor and 9400m video card.. Overall everything else ran fine and quick, but I do a lot in iPhoto and this would be annoying...

2) Mac Book Pro/24" ACD - as you mentioned above, an expensive solution and as I do not need portability it is an expensive way to go.. I thought hard about the 17" and not get a monitor, but I really want a large display...

3) Mac Pro/24" ACD - the best option to get the same power as the iMac, but an expensive solution... And honestly for what I do it would be a bit overkill..

Bottom line is that Apple does not offer a mid-range desktop without a monitor.. You either go Mini or Mac Pro.. I am going to wait until June to see what the summer offers!!! If nothing, than most likely mini/ACD...

I recommend you try another computer manufacturer.

I seriously doubt you will be satisfied with any apple product, at this point.

Can't do, other computer manufacturer = NO Snow Leopard

Nah... summer should bring something nice.. if they fix the iMac screens or upgrade the mini to the new Nvidia card, that would be good...

I would not expect a summer update to the iMac, as they were updated in October, and the Pro line is due for an update.

And it is doubtful that the Mini will come with an i7 chip, but I suppose anything is possible.

The OP could always hackintosh a nice i7 machine, which would allow for Snow Leopard.

The reality is that there no a solution for my situation. It's really sad that a big company like Apple leaves its customers in these situations. Use the computer to study, work and leisure. I do not know really what to do! Mac mini does not have enough power, Cinema Display 24" has a lower resolution.......

30" Cinema Display it's really old monitor. I tried to buy an iMac 27" Core i7 for high performance and a large monitor size and resolution. The Mac Mini have really lower perforamnce. I've a 13.3" MacBook Pro with 2.26 C2D and i want something better...

the mini has a 2.66 core 2 duo ,
your macbookpro has 2.26mhz core 2 duo so you would have a sped boost there , and because the mini supports 2 displays you could add 2x 24 inch cinema displays if you like
i mean it should offer enough power for your needs ,
or is it more that you want more then your best bet is a macpro anyway
it offers you 2x 2.93 ghz intel xeon quads , 32gb ddr3 ram , 8tb harddrive space and and with the right graphic cards (yes it takes more then one ) it makes a good gaming rig too

but you should really ask yourself if you really absolutely need a lot more power
