what speakers?

We have a pretty small room with a sony 40" Bravia and Apple TV.
The sound quality just isn't great on the tv, its just not that clear.
What would be the best speakers to add? We can't blast the neighbors out, we just need it to be better, and a bit more exciting!

I currently have a pair of Paradigm Atoms and they are a fantastic pair of speakers for the price (~$350/pair). You can't purchase them online (if you find them online they are grey market and aren't being sold by an authorized Paradigm dealer), so you'll have to find your nearest dealer, but they're worth it. They have fairly decent bass for a speaker so small, but I'd also recommend getting subwoofer if you really want to hear/feel explosions and the like.

It depends on your situation but I would recommend a soundbar. I got one of the Yamahas for my parents and they loved it. No clutter, no wires and no audio issues.

They do a good job and they are compact- ideal for a small room.

On the other extreme I could not recommend enough the B&W MT 30 package which is what I am running at the moment. Will be replacing these with the B&W CM 8 very soon.

This is like asking what kind of wine to order, it is so based on taste. That said I've been into hi-fi for about 15 years and have owned Paradigm, Mirage, Phase Tech, Omega, Magnepan, Gallo, Polk and probably a few others and listened to hundreds more. Right now I've actually scaled back in the hobby and only have a surround system on my main living room TV rather than a dedicated home theater as I've had for most of the last decade. My current speakers are Polk Blackstone series. They're small satellites, not something I'd recommend without a sub. But Polk makes some good, very affordable bookshelf speakers too. The Polk house sound is very laid back. Not muddy by any stretch but not etched and hyper detailed. The Paradigms I owned for example, I eventually found to be far too "bright". Polks are on the other end of that spectrum. Otherwise look at some internet only companies for good value, like Aperion Audio.

I've just got a simple two speaker setup, which was relatively cheap, and sounds great. Eltax Monitor IIIs driven by a Cambridge A1 amp, cost about £150 altogether. The Apple TV 2 is connected to the amp with a cheap digital to analogue converter that I picked up on Amazon (the amp doesn't have an digital input).

Three main questions:

1. How big is the room? ('pretty small" can mean different things)
2. What is your budget?
3. Do you want a quick fix or a long-term solution?

Can you hook up a pair of speakers to the tv? If so, and you have stereo in the house, hook those speakers up and see how it sounds. If you like the sound, buy a pair of used speakers and hook them directly to the tv. That is how I have my Pioneer tv set up. It actually has decent sound, and I hooked up some speakers and a sub woofer to it. More than enough for me.
